Tastes Great SS Controversy???

Following the selection of the rosters for the 2009 NASBL All Star Game there have been some grumblings about the selection of IronPig SS Jose (happy feet) Reyes as the starter for the midsummer classic. A closer look at the numbers reveals why, Reyes was selected to be the starter ahead of Illinois SS Hanley (ooh what a big bat I have) Ramirez.

H Ramirez: .260 average, 19 2b, 5 3b, 18 hr, 46 rbi, 12 sb, .975 fielding %
J Reyes: .313 average, 25 2b, 19 3b, 10 hr, 44 rbi, 43 sb, .982 fielding %

As the numbers clearly show, while Ramirez is having a good year also, Reyes' numbers across the board are quite good also. In our opinion, the Tastes Great team would do well with either player in the lineup, but we expect that the Tastes Great pitching staff would rather have Reyes' behind them when the pitch is delivered. Therefore, we support the decision to start Reyes instead of Ramirez and look forward to an exciting Tastes Great victory.

Dempster: I Don't Get No Respect

I'm leading NASBL in wins, but when my team releases a story about next year's starting rotation, I don't even get a mention! What are they trying to tell me?

I get selected to start the All-Star game, and the best the league press release says about me is, "Lowe holds a measurable advantage over Dempster as the starter."

No matter what I do, I Just Don't Get No Respect.

Well, I'd just like to make one thing clear to Less Filling fanbois who think it's over because I'm starting the All-Star game - It Ain't Over till I decide it's Over!"

Tastes Great is going to kick Less Filling butt!

Who do You Like to Trade With?

What Kind of Trader are You?

Trade discussions are always fun. After all, we all fantasize about improving our team. However, I have noticed over the years that there are several types of negotiators. Here are some I thought I would mention.

1. The Fisherman: The Fisherman contacts you with an inquiry – is your ace pitcher or stud player available. I have this can of worms which includes this big red one. I will swap you my can of worms for your pitcher or player. An honest Fisherman knows he will have to throw is offer out many times before he might snag a winner, but he is willing to make the effort with high hopes. His strategy is kind of like the person on the street corner who is attempting to sell a wooden #2 pencil for $100,000. Sure, most people will pass him by. But all he has to do is sell one and he will cover his expenses and garner a nice profit, which he will enjoy for years. Of course the not so honest Fisherman might believe that his can of worms is worth more than his #2 wooden pencil.

2. The Fox: The Fox offers to send you his good pitcher or player for your pitcher or player of equal or lesser value. The unsuspecting manager sees value in the deal and starts contemplating how the potential acquisition will benefit his team and considers making the deal. Usually the Fox is aware of some tiny bit of information not known by the hen; i.e. the pitcher he is offering just threw his arm out and is scheduled for Tommy John surgery or the player he is offering had gone into the wall to make a catch and disappeared into the abyss.

3. The Shell Mover of the Shell Game: The Shell Mover hides his bean under a shell and lets you pick it correctly, suggesting how smart you are. Then, before you can walk away with a consummated deal he ups the anti; suggesting that his bean is worth a package of players or picks that he covets. Usually, after the deal is cut you walk away from the table and realize he picked your pocket.

4. The Bait and Switch Guy: The Baiter starts out offering you a set of silverware to go with your fine china and then switches his offer to some plasticware he has picked up at several fast food stops on his way to the bank. This guy is a marathoner. He can make the discussions last several hours and moves in for his choice of players/pitchers as the unsuspecting mark tires out. If he is really good at his craft – he is known as a Master Baiter. Hopefully, he washed the plasticware before you acquire it.

5. The Cutter: The Cutter is the guy who makes an offer for a Pitcher/player and then bad mouths the pitcher/player who he is seeking by pointing out the pitcher’s/player’s flaws. I always find this guy interesting, especially if he starts his quest with a comment like: “I like Babe Ruth even though he hits into a lot of double-plays,” or “he goes down in the clutch,” or “he can’t hit LHP,” or “he can’t field a groundball handed to him.” He wants you to feel like he is doing you a favor by taking your player off your roster.

I have been had by all these guys over the years. I have learned my lessons and now I try to review my resources when a deal is offered. I do not always stick to that procedure, but I try. My dad told me a fair deal is a good deal, and if you are willing to make the deal, you should be willing to take either side of the deal.

In our latest round of deals between Blocks 2 and 3, I felt a little left out. I saw some players move that I would love to have on my roster. I turned down some deals because I did not like the offer. I made some offers that were turned down. I hated helping the Fighting Sioux by sending them Ben Sheets, my favorite pitcher on my roster. I have moved my 3 first drafted pitchers – Oswalt got me Cabrera, Garland was a cut, and Sheets got me 2 not so early picks and Braden Looper. Looper could improve on Sheet’s numbers for the Griz, he sure can’t be any worse.

Oh, by the way, the type of trader I do not like dealing with is the Cutter. Especially one, who gives up on the deal and starts looking for reasons to blast my player to show me how stupid I was for not trading him.

What kind of Trader are you? What kind of Trader do you like to deal with or not deal with?

How Many Runs Will Outlaw Give Up In 2010?

How many runs will Outlaw give up in 2010? The Outlaw fan who makes the closest guess will win a brand new Cadillac Escalade in a contest announced by the Outlaw Josey Wales today.

It's likely that the winner will be four-digit guess. Outlaw management is cringing at the sight of their pitchers' 2009 MLB seasons and is trying to figure out how to get fans to the ballpark next season after this year's team raises expectations. With the team's 2nd and 3rd round draft picks traded away, the pitching staff isn't likely to get any help from the draft next year. Here's a rundown of Outlaw's starting pitchers' 2009 MLB seasons so far:

1) Tim Hudson - Zero IP. Outlaw's career wins leader (116) had Tommy John surgery in 2008 and it looks like he will return to the MLB Braves this season, but it's not likely that he will have enough IP to play for Outlaw next year.

2) Jake Peavy - 81 IP, 3.97 ERA. Jake was inconsistent early in the season then went down on June 8 with tendon damage to his right ankle. He may or may not return to the Padres this season and may or may not have enough IP to play for Outlaw next season.

3) Scott Kazmir - 74 IP, 6.69 ERA. Kazmir had a month-long DL stint earlier this year. That was the highlight of his season as he has been absolutely awful when he does take the mound.

4) Rich Harden - 87 IP, 4.76 ERA. Rich has been getting hammered pretty consistently this year. A few stellar starts have kept his ERA from reaching the stratosphere. Par for the course for Outlaw starters, Rich had a 3-week DL stint earlier in the season.

5) Scott Baker - 114 IP, 5.04 ERA. Scott's reaction to being traded to Outlaw was, "Holy crap, I'd better check on my health insurance!" Baker hasn't seen any DL time this year, he's just been bad. Wales fans are hoping for a 2010 MLB resurgence for the promising youngster.

4) Joba Chamberlain - 102 IP, 3.86 ERA. Inconsistency and no time on the DL is enough to make Joba the highlight of Outlaw's real-life MLB performance so far. But no Outlaw starter gets away unscathed. Chamberlain was sentenced to nine months probation for DUI and his mother was arrested for selling meth this year.

Spurs Roll the Dice

Dallas Morning News.........Well DFW decided to 'roll the dice' to help their playoff run when they traded for OF David Dejesus and relief pitchers RH Carlos Marmol & Jesse Carlson for ILL. The Spurs sent back OF Darin Erstad and Pitcher's Mark Hendrickson & Doug Brocail. The two teams also traded Draft picks, DFW sending their 1st and ILL sending their 5th. 'We needed help in all three areas' stated the skipper of the Spurs, Red Robbins. "You hate to give up your 1st round pick, but to get something you have to give up something. We got off to a fast start and everything was looking great. BK-2 exposed our weaknesses and showed that the foundation was made more of a house of cards instead of being solid. We were in a situation where we could have stood pat and done nothing, or take a chance and roll the dice. If we would have stood pat I'm sure we wouldn't be in the play off hunt. We have miss out on some trades in the past by hesitating to pull the trigger. This time we decided to roll the dice, and hope it comes up 'Seven' instead of 'Snake Eyes'", Red went on to say.

Reporter Ima Dumas ask Robbins, 'You sure like to use metaphors don't you'? Robbins just glared at him when he left the press conference. Later Dumas said that Robbins 'Shot him the Bird'. When asked about it Robbins said, 'I Wish' !

Sioux Shore Up for Stretch Run

Burlington, VT

The Vermont Fighting Sioux capped off a frenzied few days on the trade market early this morning by acquiring burnt-out reliever Cory Wade from Lake Champlain. Wade fits nicely into the last but least category, as he's by far the least splash-worthy acquisition.

To recap, in order of splashy to Wade:

  1. Vermont trades the future for playoff nirvana (possible copyright infrigement), sending the 7th overall pick in the 2007 draft Ryan Zimmerman to Lake Champlain in exchange for the ageless Chipper Jones. Zimmerman was producing a .262 average for Vermont; Chipper .375 up on the Lake. Zimmerman finished his 2.5 year VFS career with a .253 batting average, 45 HRs and 201 RBIs along with some darn good defense. Ryan also littered the Top 10 in a dozen plus career Sioux offensive categories and was an all-around good egg.
  2. Gone is Cliff Floyd, he of the .195 batting average for VFS (fun Floyd fact, he has a -14 OPS+ for the Padres this year). In return Vermont acquires Aubrey Huff from the Illinois Chow Chows. Huff has been chowing down on NASBL pitching all year to a .320 clip and will figure prominently at both the DH and 1b (fixing Albert Pujols overusage issues along the way!!) spots. Vermont also surrendered their 2nd and 5th round picks to ILL in the deal.
  3. In a trade featuring players with zero future value, Brett Myers was sent packing to Troy in exchange for Jesse Litsch. This year Myers was 8-6, 5.45 for VFS and Litsch 5-7, 4.85 in TRY. The hope is Vermont's offense will give Litsch the run support he needs to become the #3 option in the rotation behind Ervin Santana & Jeff Suppan (no joke, 6-1, 4.42). TRY gained a 3rd round pick from the Sioux in addition to Myers' pleasant disposition. In 4.5 seasons as a middle-of-the-rotation guy, Myers produced the exact type of numbers you'd expect, a 38-37 record to go with a 5.60 ERA and a decent 6.9 K/9 ratio. Brett's 38 wins are sadly good enough for #3 on the all-time VFS wins list, edging former gamer Brian Lawrence by 1 win. His 593 Ks make puts him atop the Sioux career leader list in that category. 良い不戦勝者〔付け足し〕の野茂英雄、私たちはあなたがいなくて残念に思います (or good-bye Hideo Nomo, we miss you).
  4. Wade for Joel Hanrahan and a #8 pick. Jockey/GM Steve Beard whipped Wade like Mine That Bird after 5 furlongs and he offers no value to VFS this regular season. This, along with all other moves, is clearly a move made with an eye toward the playoffs.
There are 59 games left this year on the Sioux calendar. The 4 trades resulted in +40 Win Shares for Vermont, roughly equating to 13 wins over a 162 game season, or 5 more wins the rest of the way. Will those 5 extra wins be enough to get the Sioux a coveted 1st round bye in the playoffs? They better given the value (Zimmerman and 4 draft picks) that was doled out to acquire the additional wins. Win shares are only one metric and their Strat relevance is questionable at best, but it's an easy one to apply.

In summary, Vermont shored up their rotation, added a great arm out of the pen and picked up two hitters who can flat-out mash. In fact, if one were to use LCC-like lineup setting skills (defense be damned!!), here's what a future Sioux lineup could look like:

RF Raul Ibanez
3b Chipper Jones
2b Albert Pujols (yes, he's rated there)
LF Carlos Quentin
DH Aubrey Huff
SS Mike Aviles
1b Lyle Overbay
C Kelly Shoppach
CF Grab bag of poop (Crisp, Pacman, Gerut)

Plenty of defensive subs remain to fill in at late innings if need be. As a wise Canadian beer swilling philospher once said, "Flags fly forever."

Chows add Another 1st and a 2nd

Illinois Times --

“FIRE SALE!!!!!” The annual cry for Chows owner/GM Brad Sherlag was shouted from the mountaintops this season and for the second time in three years the Chows will go into the draft with a triumvirate of first round draft picks. You will definitely need a program to recognize the Chows when they take the field in BlockIII. Gone are the Chows most productive hitter (Aubrey Huff), best two right-handed set-up men (Carlos Marmol and Chad Bradford), best Left-Handed reliever (Jesse Carlson) and starting RF (David DeJesus).

All in all the Chows made four deals that break down as follows:

Deal 1 (previously announced): Troy Tulowitzki for LCC’s #1

Deal 2: Carlos Marmol, Jesse Carlson, David DeJesus and ILL’s #5 for DFW’s #1

Deal 3: Aubrey Huff for VFS#2 and VFS#5

Deal 4: (The we still have to field a team deal) send Chad Bradford to PCM for Kevin Kouzmanoff

Coming back to Illinois were also a slew of players: Floyd, Hendrickson, Brocail, Erstad and Eveland.

“There were two guys that really hurt us to trade – Tulo and Marmol. Troy was a cornerstone type player, but as I said the day we made the trade, Hanley has worked hard on his defense and deserves a chance to play everyday. Carlos has done a great job for us and frankly was my favorite player on the team. When I watched us play, it was usually wearing a #49 jersey. I think he will emerge to be one of the top closers in the game, but with Nathan and Cordero we couldn’t pass up a chance to get a first rounder. Looking ahead to the draft there are a lot of exciting players, CF and SP appear to be especially strong. Hopefully this will be a franchise-changing draft and get us up there with the big boys in our division.”

You can accuse the Chows of incompetence, but never inactivity.

Spurs acquire Derosa

Dallas Morning News.........In a move to knock the Dallas Cowboys off the front page and to beef up their right handed hitting, the Spurs traded for INF/OF'er Mark Derosa from LVI. Derosa wasn't having a monster year by any means hitting .236 with a OBA of .360. Derosa's vertically will come in handy and is expected to play basically where ever needed. Derosa welcomes the chance to play on a team battling for a play off spot. He wanted to give a 'Shout Out' to LVI's Kevin Burns for making this opportunity happen. Ask what position he (Derosa) preferred playing the most, he simply replied 'The position that has my name is in the lineup'! TMZ reported that one of the reasons the trade was made was that Derosa recently was seen with Jessica Simpson. TMZ reported when they contacted the front office of the Spurs a spoke person said, 'For Sure'!! Reports were later denied.

Outlaw Acquires Kuo For Playoff Run

Outlaw announced the acquisition of Hong-Chih Kuo from the Lake Champlain Cannibals for Jason Frasor and Outlaw's 2010 2nd round draft pick. "We are ecstatic about adding a pitcher as talented as Kuo for our 2009 playoff drive," said GM Hildebrant during the press release. When asked whether the team paid too high a price for a pitcher with 19 regular season IP left, Hildebrant replied "Yes the price was high, but we hope to add exactly 36 playoff innings to Kuo's resume. And being deadlocked with the rival Trash Heap for the NASBL South championship means that every remaining 2009 NASBL inning counts. With Jake Peavy, Tim Hudson, Scott Kazmir, Rich Harden and Ryan Dempster all spending time on the 2009 MLB DL, we figure we better go for it this year."

Kuo, MLB's 2008 Set-Up Man of the Year, was 5 and 4 with a 3.41 ERA for the Cannibals so far this year. "Getting a pitcher of Kuo's quality and who can start as well as bridge the late-inning gap to the Mexicutioneer adds immense flexibility to the team," reported Hildebrant. With Rich Harden (2.07 MLB ERA), Joba Chamberlain (2.60 MLB ERA), and Kuo (2.14 MLB ERA) all rated as starters, Outlaw could throw a dominating trio of aces against any team in a short series. When asked whether Joba or Hong-Chih would start or relieve during the remainder of the season, the GM said, "We'll have to take a long, hard look at the individual matchups. Anything's possible when NASBL races go down to the wire."

One Step Forward Two Steps Back

Illinois Times -- Two years ago the Chows traded Josh Johnson and Rich Harden to give them three first rounders (including their own). Those three picks were Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Pena and Kelly Johnson. Today the Chows traded Tulowizki for a 1st. At season's end, the Chows are expected to release Kelly Johnson. This now leaves Carlos Pena as all that is left of "the players that would trasform the Chow Chows."

Tulowitzki was solid for the Chows, but with Hanley Ramirez's improved fielding this season, he has become an extra part. The Chows began shopping Tulo about a week ago by making unsolicited trade proposals to various NASBL clubs. Unconfirmed reports had the Chows pairing Tulo with others to try to get the 1st overall pick, then trying to turn Tulo into Clayton Kershaw, getting a lower first rounder and then finaly consumating the deal they made with LCC. Coming to the Chows is LCC's first round pick, which figures to be a top 10 pick in next year's draft.

"We have learned some things over the years. We are now going to take the best player available and ignore needs. This sort of wroked out with Tulo -- we got a couple of good years from him and then were able to basicly get the same thing back -- a 1st. When we have drafted for need over the years, it just hasn't worked out well for us."

Hopefully, Illinois does not come to regret trading Troy within the division. Brad Sherlag has not hesitated in the past to make deals with the mighty TG East, previously making the Dunn for Nathan deal, the DeJesus deal, the Harden deal and the James Shields deal within the division. "I don't know why we have made som many deals within our own division. Maybe we just match up well with the clubs we know best."

Valley Iron Pigs by the score of 5 to 4 at Thunderdome.

Pocono had 3 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 3rd inning with the
help of 4 hits. They would be enough to earn the win. Lehigh Valley
threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Dan Haren(6-9) allowed 1 run in 7 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory.
Cla Meredith got the save, his 1st. Gil Meche(3-4) was given the loss.

'We lose our concentration for one pitch, and we lose the game.' Kevin Burns

In an great finish the Pocono Chin Music won in dramatic fashion over the
Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs by a score of 5 to 4 at Thunderdome.

Pocono came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
with 2 runs on 3 hits. Prince Fielder started the inning off right when he
hit a single. Jose Guillen stepped up to the plate and he grounded into a
double play. Bengie Molina then doubled. Garret Anderson stepped in and he
blasted a two-run home run (his 10th of the season) giving Pocono the victory
and sending the 30,568 home-town fans home happy. Pocono had 12 hits for the
night while Lehigh Valley had 9.

The victory was credited to Roy Corcoran(3-2) who went 1 and 1/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Johnny Cueto(4-3) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 3
homeruns in 8 and 2/3 innings of work.

Corcoran and Ben Francisco were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after
the great come from behind victory. As Bill Anderson, Jr. noted, 'A win like
this one can do wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy -
the fans, the players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen
runs!'

Brandon Webb came through with a solid 10 innings as the Honolulu Hawaiians
defeated the Pocono Chin Music in 10 innings by a score of 2 to 0 at
Thunderdome.

Neither team scored in the first nine innings. Honolulu came out the victor
in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Nate McLouth started the
attack as he smacked a single. Dan Haren then uncorked a wild pitch. One
out later, Asdrubal Cabrera stepped in and he laced a one-base hit. Aaron
Rowand came up and he lashed a single. Yadier Molina stepped into the box
and laced a base-knock. Pocono went down quietly in the bottom of the 10th.

Webb(5-5) went the distance for the shutout. Haren(5-9) was tagged with the
loss. He pitched 9 and 2/3 innings allowing only 6 hits and 1 walk.

Bill Anderson, Jr. was obviously impressed with the pitching of Webb, 'That
guy made us look a little silly out there this afternoon. We just couldn't
get to him at all - everything was working for him. I just hope that he got
that kinda performance out of his system.'

Thunderdome where the Pocono Chin Music beat the Springfield Isotopes 7 to
4.

Pocono came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning scoring 3

walk. Torii Hunter came next and he smacked a single. Hunter was running on
the next pitch and he stole second. After an out was recorded, Kouzmanoff
stepped in and he clubbed a three-run home run (his 10th of the season). One
out later, Kaz Matsui stepped in and he doubled. Joe Inglett added to the
uprising and was walked intentionally. Pocono had 9 hits for the afternoon.

Damaso Marte(5-1) ended up with the loss in relief. Pocono now has a record
of 33-45. Doug Sherlag was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been
sputtering along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two. That
won't get it done.'
