My 2 cents......Trade Grading 101

You think 'The Dark Knight' broke records last weekend. Well it has nothing on the NASBL. If you like movies then Batman wins. If you are a huge Start Geek then the NASBL wins big. This season has been a record breaking year in the number of trades that have been made. With teams gearing up for the play offs and the rest going into retool/rebuild mode for next year. Here is our scorecard for each team- We will grade for this season first, then the future-Win/Lose/Draw

---Taste Great---
HHA- Win/Win...............GRK- Win/Lose
SPR- Win/Draw...............OJW- Draw/Draw
LCC- Win/Win.................LVI- Win/Win
ILL- Lose/Win..................NJT- Draw/Win

---Less Filling---
PCM-Win/Draw...............MSU- Win/Draw
GCG- Lose/Draw..............DFW- Lose/Draw
VFS- Lose/Win.................SPL- Win/Win
NYK-Lose/Draw...............TRY- Lose/Win

Next time we will break down the first half of The Taste Great Division. Just remember if you disagree with any grade above, It's only 2 cents!

Knights Deal Saito, But Deny Being in Rebuilding Mode

(New York Daily Mirror - July 22, 2008)

NEW YORK - With the Knights playing the worst ball since moving to New York, its no surprise that contending teams have come knocking on Mitch Pak's door at Empire Field.

But, at least up until now, Knights fans thought that Pak's plan was to avoid trades and build through the draft. The legitimacy of that plan has now taken a huge hit, given the Knights brutal collapse after an 87-win season last year. Even so, Knights fans would expect the team to seek trades for expendable players, not their bullpen anchor and reigning LF Rookie of the Year.

But there it is.

On Tuesday the Knights dealt closer Takashi Saito to Lake Champlain for middle reliever Rafael Perez and cash considerations. While not on par with his stunning performance in 2007, Saito was having a terrific year for an awful Knights club, posting 16 saves and a 3.09 ERA in 25 appearances. Perez, 26, is a good arm, but is seemingly a mismatch in this deal. He will be of limited utility to the club this year due to overusage considerations. The club did not receive a draft pick in this deal either.

Why deal the best pitcher on the club? "Look, we love Kash," said GM Mitch Pak in a conference call this morning, "but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to have a top-flight closer on a team that almost never takes leads into the 9th. Perez has a solid arm and will be helping us for some time to come. We also think that the cash considerations we received in the deal will help us snag the number 1 pick in next year's draft."

Sources in the Knights organization say that Pak feared that Saito, at age 38, was a declining asset and an arm/back injury waiting to happen. Other GM's know this as well, making Saito's trade value more questionable as time passes. Perez is a decade younger than Saito and could be groomed for set-up duty next year.

Knights fans are understandably upset that one of the team's best players was traded in an underwhelming deal, but know in the backs of their minds that Saito was not going to turn this team around and his departure won't make things much worse. After all, it can't get much worse than 28-74 at the All-Star break, can it?

Saito becomes the third closer dealt by the Knights. The first two trades had decidedly different outcomes. In 2003, the Knights traded Jason Isringhausen to Canyon Country for Michael Young, who has since become team captain. In 2005, the team dealt Joe Nathan for Barry Zito. Nathan has been an All-Star every season since leaving New York while Zito has been a horrendous bust.

ALL-STAR GAME UPDATE: The Mirror will present its annual All-Star preview in a few days, with the contest to be played next week.

Griz - Buyers? or Sellers?

Griz management befuddles fans once again. First the Griz make history with their first ever division 1st place position at the conclusion of any Block. Then the Griz start selling their best players in a building effort.

Initially, Griz fans were surprised, pleased, having fun following Block 1. Team fans were not chanting the old Cub's motto - "wait until next year," "wait until next decade," or "wait until next century." Fans were actually happy, reading boxscores, talking positively about the team. It was like a scene from the movie Major League. Griz fans had something to cheer about and were spending a few extra bucks to pay for gas to go see a game.

Then Griz management pulled a boner. Sometimes boners are good, but usually not in a locker room.

Anyway - following Block 1 the Griz traded 2007 World Series Hero - Mike Lowell and Ace Starter Mark Buehrle along with 3 stud relievers (all early 2008 draft picks) to Seattle for mega prospect - Rookie (I haven't hit Jack Howard's weight yet) Alex Gordon and four players who were instantly destined as post season cuts. The Griz became instant SELLERS, and were looking to give up 1st place. BOOOOOOOOO !!!!!

Griz managemnet followed that trade with another SELLERS move, trading one of its Stud Relievers - Pete Moylan to the Georgia Roadkill for a # 5 draft pick and a decent reliever in David Riske.

Fans started chanting "wait until next year/decade/next team owner."

Suprisingly, the Griz held on to 1st place until the final reports came in for Block 2. Dropping to 2nd - 8 games back. OH WELL. Then the Griz started getting email from Kevin Burns - 21 in fact. Kevin wanted All Star catcher Russell Martin more than a horny 17 year old boy wants a cheerleader. The discussions went on about ten days to no avail. Kevin offered players like Carl Crawford, Ryan Howard, Carlos Quentin, Gerald Laird, just to name a few, and several times the deal were as good as done, but then Kevin would try to tweak it. Jack Howard, the Griz manager did not want to give up his All Star Catcher, though he was interested in the power lefty hitting bats being offered. The NASBL managers would also be happy if the Griz broke up the Iron Pigs future lineup of Crawford, Hamilton, Quentin, Howard, Utley, Uggla, and Reynolds, just to name the power side of the Pigs batting order.

The initial trade deadline came and went with no trade, so Howard did a small deal giving up Norris Hopper, Bobby Howry, and a #10 to the Spurs for used up reserve OFer Rajai Davis, TOR's injured back-up closer Casey Janssen and the Spurs # 5. Another SELLERS move. Still backtracking.

Then Kevin offered Ryan Howard and Dan Uggla along with Gerald Laird for Martin, Rocco (Kevin Hopes He Comes Back) Baldelli, and improving (but needs lots more improvement) Joel Pineiro. With Morneau and Phillips, the Griz really didn't need to add Howard, and Uggla, but Uggla's numbers were to good to resist and the managing Howard figures he can always find a spot in the batting order for the slugging Howard. Kevin backed off a little from his offer, but after a total of 43 emails and an hour+ long phone conversation, a deal was struck when the Griz included a #9 pick. The Griz are now BUYERS in a BIG WAY. Fans are chanting "Lets GO Bears."

Coach Howard looked at his line-up and with the outfield depleted, looked to add some ABs and a glove to the OF. The Troy Haymakers had put Vernon Wells on its available list and the Griz traded its # 5 and prospect/suspect STL RHP Anthony Reyes for Wells and Troy's #11. The final Griz move this season - a wash trade to fill a hole - kind of a BUY.

The Griz have never been this active in the trade market - it will be interesting to see what comes of it.

Outlaw Denies Allegations

Outlaw Josey Wales categorically denies the ludicrous and unfounded allegations of cheating alleged by that rag Texas Tattler. While we have no doubt that Omar "The Great" Vizquel could simultaneously play two or three positions, we recognize our responsibility to utilize his great talents in a responsible and fair manner. Let me be clear about this - Omar has never, ever, played more than one position at a time. As far as that bogus partial boxscore, any doofus with a text editor could make that up.

OMARGATE ROCKS OUTLAW!

Dateline Outlaw Pond - Just how good is Omar Vizquel? This reporter, Hack Wilson of the Texas Tattler, believes that Vizquel is good enough to pitch and play shortstop at the same time and trigger a coverup that could rock the foundations of NASBL! Evidence has surfaced implicating the Outlaw Josey Wales of trying to gain an advantage in the tight South by playing their best man at multiple positions at the same time. After hearing hushed rumors of this sleight of hand, I discovered more sources, willing to speak only under deep anonymity, who confirmed the unbelievable. Now for the proof - the below partial boxscore and linescore was recovered from the Recycle Bin of the Outlaw Pond scorekeeper's computer shortly after a recent game against Lehigh. They clearly shows Vizquel brought in to pitch in the 8th inning while remaining in at shortstop. Even more stunning, the "official" league boxscore doesn't show Vizquel pitching at all! How far up does this coverup go! The only league official willing to be quoted, and then only 0ff-the-record, called the allegations "preposterous," and added "obviously we have to control a power as potent as Omar Vizquel and we certainly wouldn't let him play more than one position at a time, or the rest of NASBL wouldn't have a chance." Outlaw officials did not respond to inquiries, but one Wales employee who reluctantly spoke off the record mumbled something about software bug.

The Proof:

Iron Pig Trade Announcement

In a continuing roster shake up, Bethlehem sends aging and oft injured Akinori Otsuka to Lake Champlain for oft injured, but younger, Brandon McCarthy and a draft pick. Manager Burns seemed non committal when asked about the deal. He said "we believe that younger players heal quicker and we are excited about the possibility of competition for our injured reserve spot for next offseason. It should be an exciting battle between McCarthy and newly acquired Rocco Baldelli". Stay tuned for further developments.

Roadkill tell Escobar to "Take Another For The Team"

Opening Day starter Kelvim Escobar was told to "leave his pride at the door" by Mgr Bobby Cox as he was informed late today that he would be moved to the #3 spot in the rotation following the Roadkill's acquisition of Fausto Carmona from Troy. The price was steep as Georgia moved Jesse Litch, #2 & #8 draft picks. Kelvim has now from ace to mid-rotation status after the 'Kill acquired John Lackey (via VFS) & the Carmona deal.

It's obvious the Roadkill front office have little confidence in the scouting dept as they continue to deal high picks for a run at the tight TGS division & a hopeful return to the NASBL playoffs. "I was assured it was ok to pass on Tim Lincecum when it was obvious that the 'Heap were going to cut a deal with Grundy. All I heard was the "upside" of YoGo." Gallardo is having a solid rookie season with staff mate Dustin McGowan. The Roadkill faithful only hope the moves have the same impact as the 2006 season & another title.

Sioux / Cannibal Trade Falls Through on Tacky Fashion Issue

The St Albans Onion, 17 July 2008

In the wee hours of Wednesday morning, Lake Champlain Cannibals owner / GM Steve Beard (61-40, 3rd best record in the league and next to last in his division), pondering his 2nd straight season of outstanding team performance with no post-season prospects to show for it, was struck with a Newtonian apple.

Immediately he got on the metaphorical horn to in-state GM Justin Rabidoux of the Vermont Fighting Sioux, and in mere minutes the Trade of the Century was sealed:

To VFS:
All of LCC's 2009 Rookie / FA draft picks, plus placement in the TG East

To LCC:
Placement in the LF Central

Said GM Beard, "Actually, it's not that totally original as far as ideas go. I was inspired by the old 'Ricky Williams for the Saints entire draft' trade that Iron Mike Ditka famously once made."

"But the twist in this deal is that there weren't any actual players involved, just placement in a certain division. See, the Cannibals keep getting stuck behind HHA and SPR in our division. Kind of like when you're at the movie theater, just settling in to watch the new Batman flick, and George freaking Muresan sits down right in front of you."

"So at that point, you have two choices. You can try to fight George Muresan, or you can tell the little kid next to you that you'll swap him your whole almost-untouched garbage bucket full of popcorn with real butter flavoring, Plus your 3/4 full Vat-o-Dr Pepper with game-chewed straw for his seat."

"Then if he does it, BANG! You've got smoooooooth sailing, and while the kid doesn't get to see Batman at all until it comes out on DVD, he does at least end up coked to the gills on caffeine and sugar, and has a blast hucking popcorn around at everybody for a couple of hours."

"It's a win-win."

However, just when this idyllic dream-trade seemed to be a done deal, things took an unexpected and mildly disturbing turn when members of the Sioux PR team demanded a Ricky and Iron Mike-like photoshoot for the cover of ESPN the Magazine (you know, the one with Ricky in a wedding dress and Ditka in a tux?)

When GM Beard gave the wrong answer to a fashion question posed by Rabidoux (the always-tricky "does this dress make my @ss look fat?" non-request for information), a spirited exchange of Yo Momma jokes broke out.

When it became clear that Rabidoux's 7th and 8th inning Yo Momma's ("Yo Momma's so fat, when she fell down and broke her leg gravy ran out," and "Yo Momma's so fat, when she hauls @ss she needs to take 6 trips") were clearly about ready to hand the lead to the feared Yo Momma closer, Beard capitulated.

But the damage was done, and the deal was off.

This has been a special report by the St Albans Onion.

LVI Welcomes Derek Jeter to the Fold

In a continuing saga of roster moves, Lehigh Valley is pleased to announce the acquisition of long time fan favorite Derek Jeter and his, er "posse" (see photo in VFS article). Derek will step in and give us the lead off hitter that we have been lacking. His "posse" of screaming followers should help us to fill the stands on a regular basis which should allow management to possibly expand the stadium following this season. Stay tuned for further developments.

VFS grants Jeter's wish proving it's good to be a Pig

Burlington, VT

The Vermont Fighting Sioux have moved another franchise icon as Vermont continues to ship off proven assets for draft picks. SS Derek Jeter will be packing his bags and heading to the Leigh Valley Iron Pigs. Vermont received SS Jack Wilson and a 2nd round pick in return; also heading to LVI is VFS' 7th round pick.

In his 4+ seasons in Vermont, Jeter established himself as an anchor at top of the order and in the middle of the field. Jeter is all over Vermont's all-time offensive leader board, ranking #2 in ABs, #3 in RBIs and 8th in HRs.

Jeter joins Jorge Posada, John Lackey and Billy Wagner as Sioux stars moved in 2008. In return VFS now has 2-1st round picks, 4-2nd round picks and 2-3rd round picks in the 2008 rookie/FA draft.

Unconfirmed Iron Pigs and Grizzlies Blockbuster

Dateline Bethlehem PA, 7/16/2008, 10:30 EST: A reported blockbuster has just been completed between the Iron Pigs and the Grizzlies. Sources close to the teams tell us that the deal has just been reported to the commissioner. Lehigh Valley sends mighty slugger Ryan (Chicks dig the longball) Howard, powerful 2b Dan (Oooo what a big stick I've got) Uggla, and catcher Gerald (Oh my) Laird to the Grizzlies for backstop Russell (I double dog dare you to try to score on a sac fly) Martin, cf Rocco (I'm so tired) Baldelli, and sp Joel (I'm not a childs game) Pineiro. Officials close to the teams believe that a draft pick may have been involved in the deal. LVI manager Burns was unavailable for comment.

Chows add Outfield Depth for Play-off Push

Buyers or Sellers? GM Brad Sherlag has been tossing that question out for the last month. At the moment the Chows are 4.5 games out of the Wild Card and have a couple of teams they need to pass. "I assessed things and didn't think I could start mortgaging the future for this year. The way I saw it ws that I had one highly valuable commodity that we could afford to deal. When little interest was expressed for Pena, and it started to seem I could not get fair value for one of the best hitters in NASBL we asked -- how can we improve without mortgaging too much."

The Chows planned on making a minor deal for a defensive CF -- and figured to give up a 5th rounder or so. Then they had an opportunity to get a player they always liked. "David DeJesus plays a solid outfield, and does a nice job getting on base against Righties. We have always been deficient in LH hitters and this adds one for us that we see as a part of the team this year and beyond. We hate giving up our 2nd pick, but our draft analysis on the '09 draft has impact players only going until 1 or 2 picks into round 2. It is likely we traded a top relief pitcher for DeJesus and that is a trade that is worth it for us. Part of why we couldn't get something done for Pena was we insisted on a 1st and no one saw his value that high."

"Carlos Beltran is getting tired from playing everyday and it wasn't fair to ask Teahen to play CF - he just wasn't comfortable there. Teahen has been a Chow from the first draft and will be missed. He has been willing to do everything we asked and has played 3B, 1B, RF, LF and CF for us during his tenure. I think he will find a nice role for himslef on Honolulu."

The trade is the Chows #2 and Mark Teahen for David DeJesus.

Duelling Blown Saves By Ace Closers Create Thrills in Outlaw Pond

Defensive replacement Willy Taveras'es two-base error in the top of the ninth contributed to the New York Knight's two-run comeback and ace closer Joakim Soria's blown save. New York's one-run lead looked good with opposing ace Takashi Saito on the mound, but Aramis Ramirez led off and he doubled. Pinch runner Ryan Theriot quickly stole third base. Melvin Mora then delivered a base-hit bringing in the tying run. After an out was recorded, Adrian Gonzalez came to the plate and doubled, Mora holding at third. Willy Taveras was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Ryan Ludwick did his part to keep things going and doubled making Outlaw the victors to the delight of the home town faithful.

Ryan Ludwick hit a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Outlaw Josey Wales won in
dramatic fashion over the New York Knights by a score of 5 to 4 at Wreckin'
So Field.

Outlaw won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2
runs utilizing 4 base hits. Aramis Ramirez started the inning off right when
he doubled. Theriot proceeded to steal third base. Melvin Mora then slapped
a base-hit which scored a run. After an out was recorded, Adrian Gonzalez
came up and he doubled. Willy Taveras dug into the batters box next, but he
struck out. Ludwick kept the rally going and doubled resulting in an
exciting win for Outlaw and a wild post-game celebration by the home town
fans. For the game Outlaw out-hit New York 10 to 6.

The victory went to Joakim Soria(2-4) who went 1 inning, allowing 2 runs.
Takashi Saito(1-2) was given the loss in relief. The Outlaw ballclub's
record now stands at 46-35. Mitchell Pak was unhappy with his club's recent
performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said. 'It gets to be
embarrassing after a while.'

Corpas Salvages One for Georgia Against Rival Outlaw

It was Manny Corpas's turn to save the day in Outlaw Pond. With runners on second and third and no out in the bottom of the ninth, Manny blew a third strike by Aramis Ramirez. Outlaw summoned Manny "The Bat" Ramirez back from his day of rest to pinch hit, but Corpas induced him to ground weakly to second base. Pinch hitter Ramon Hernandez was quickly dispatched for the third out to end the game. Helton, Ordonez, and Rios all did damage by going deep.

In a dramatic ending the Georgia Roadkill staged a comeback and held on to win
over the Outlaw Josey Wales by the count of 6 to 5.

Georgia came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs
utilizing 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Alex Rios got things going
when he smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 4th of the season). Jason
Varitek stepped into the batter's box and he ripped a base-knock. Jose
Bautista then drew a walk. Jared Burton then unleashed a wild pitch. Aaron
Hill came to the plate and lined a base-hit scoring the final run of the
inning. Georgia had 9 hits for the afternoon.

Dustin McGowan(6-4) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and
allowing 5 runs. McGowan got help from Manny Corpas who earned his 9th save.
Tim Hudson(8-5) was charged with the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls in 8
and 1/3 innings.

Soria Puts Out Fire Again as Georgia Rally Just Misses

The Road Kill lit into Outlaw's bullpen in the ninth inning for three runs and sent the potential tying run to third base with one out. Joakim Soria saved the day again by inducing Ryan Garko to ground out to third and Spilborghs to fly out to left. "A guy who can shut the door on a team as powerful as Georgia two days in a row has got to be our MVP", spouted Andy Pettitte who was credited with the win and joined Jake Peavy in the "I Owe Joakim Soria A Dinner" club. Ryan Ludwick's three-run blast in the bottom of the seventh was the big hit for Outlaw who managed seven runs on only eight hits.

Alfonso Soriano collected 2 extra-base hits and had 2 RBI at Wreckin' So Field
as the Outlaw Josey Wales beat the Georgia Roadkill by the count of 7 to
6.

Outlaw had 4 runs cross the plate in the 3rd inning with the help of 4 hits.
The key at-bat was by Adrian Gonzalez who made the Outlaw fans a happy lot
when he laced a one-base hit plating two runs. Georgia had a chance in the
9th but they came up short.

The victory was credited to Andy Pettitte(4-6) who went 5 innings, allowing 3
runs. Joakim Soria gained credit for his 17th save. The losing pitcher was
Yovani Gallardo(4-1). He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 7 runs in
6 and 2/3 innings.

'Some losses are harder to take than others' Johnny Miller lamented after the
game. 'This was one of them.'

Peavy and Soria four-hit Georgia

Jake Peavy was cruising into the ninth with a one-hit, ten strikeout shutout when he ran into trouble fast and needed relief. The Road Kill put up three consecutive hits and Joakim Soria was quickly dispatched from the bullpen. Soria induced Markakis to hit into a 6-4-3 doubleplay. The shutout was gone but Peavy was able to breathe a sigh of relief. When Alex Rios's popup landed in Omar Vizquel's glove, Joakim's work was done for the day.

Jake Peavy whiffed 10 batters as the Outlaw Josey Wales defeated the Georgia
Roadkill by a score of 3 to 1 at Wreckin' So Field.

Peavy(10-3) was in control of the game from the outset. He gave up just 4
hits and 3 walks in 8 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.89 to 4.62. Georgia
had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Joakim Soria gained credit for his 16th save. Kelvim Escobar(3-7) was the
losing pitcher. He pitched 8 innings and surrendered 10 hits and 5
walks.

When asked about his strikeout total for the game, Peavy offered, 'The fan's
really got into it. It is fun to see them tally up the strikeout totals up
there in the stands. Fortunately, I kept them busy tonight - of course, it
would be all for naught without the 'W'.'

Scotty Kazmir Shuts Out Troy To Cap Well-Pitched Series

The words well-pitched series and NASBL are usually a contradiction of terms, but not during Troy's recent three-game series at Outlaw Pond. Scotty Kazmir captured the rubber match for Outlaw by throwing a seven-hit, ten strikeout shutout at the Haymakers. With several Outlaw regulars resting, the Troy and Outlaw pitching staffs enjoyed a combined 1.70 ERA for the series while hitters suffered a paltry .165 batting average.

Aramis Ramirez had 2 base hits and Jake Peavy carried a no-hitter into the 7th
inning as the Outlaw Josey Wales topped the Grundy County Grizzlies by a
score of 2 to 1 at Wreckin' So Field.

Peavy(9-3) was simply too much for the Grundy County batters. He was stingy
on the mound, allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA
from 5.25 to 4.89. The right-handed Peavy lost his chance for a no-hitter
when Stephen Drew singled with one out in the 7th inning. Grundy County had
a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

Jon Garland(1-4) suffered the loss. He allowed just 5 hits and 1 walk in 8
innings. 'He came out with good stuff,' Mark Hildebrant said about Peavy.
'He threw the ball good from the first pitch on.'
