Where in the world is Pennylegion?

As game results come in from such far reaching place as Honolulu, the world wonders where the heck is Seattle Pilot's owner Frank Pennylegion. Notoriously early in his submission of game results, the silence from the left coast has become deafening.

Rumors abound as to his whereabouts. Some say he can be found partying with new girlfriend Kate Hudson (seen here leaving THE ALIBI ROOM CLUB) as the two hop from club to club around Pioneer Square. Others wonder aloud if a disgruntled employee packed him in foam peanuts and discount shipped him to Bora Bora. Maybe the answer is much more simplistic yet common in the strat world: a serious finger injury which will not allow him to hit the swing away button on his game, rendering him unable to play. Speculation is running rampant on internet blogs as everyone seems to have a thought on the matter.

Seattle police are looking into the missing person reports filed by Frank's league mates. The commissioner is also said to be investigating and when he is found, it will surely be reported on NASBL news.

WEB GEMS- Top 8th: Kelly Johnson robbed Taylor Teagarden of a base hit.

One run was the difference at Creutzfeldt-Jakob's as the Lake Champlain
Cannibals defeated the Springfield Isotopes 7 to 6.

Lake Champlain came up with the deciding runs in the 8th inning with 3 runs
using 2 hits. Hideki Matsui kicked off the action when he lined a single.
Juan Pierre next to the plate and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Kelly
Johnson got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. J.D. Drew stepped
in and he was walked intentionally. Chris Young came to the plate and
clubbed a three-run home run. Paul Konerko was next to the plate, but was
promptly struck out. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.

Mike Wuertz(2-3) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings.
Jose Valverde earned the save, his 5th. The loss was charged to C.C.
Sabathia(6-2). Despite losing, he struckout 12 Lake Champlain batters in 8
innings.

Michael Cuddyer homered and had 4 RBI as the Springfield Isotopes beat the
Lake Champlain Cannibals by a score of 9 to 0.

Cuddyer provided much of the offense. He laced a one-base hit bringing in a
run in the 1st inning, bombed a two-run dinger in the 4th inning and doubled
bringing in a run in the 6th inning. Overall Springfield out-hit Lake
Champlain 12 to 3.

Jarrod Washburn(3-2) got the win allowing no runs in 6 innings. Clayton
Kershaw(3-4) was the loser. He surrendered 7 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings and

Knights Welcome Kinder, Gentler Era Of Self-Immolation

Fundamentals will be stressed. Lip service will be paid to pitching and defense. Position players who can defend but cannot turn around a Livan Hernandez fastball will be eyed covetously.

Baseball franchises enduring a regime change have rattled off these tenets for time immemorial—well, for at least a good 50 years before Jamie Moyer's birth. Yet all flagging clubs turn to and find comfort in these themes, citing them as if they're on the verge of cracking a long-indecipherable code.

So after a preposterously long lead-in, we come to this item: New York today welcomed aboard general manager Matt Eddy in a press conference held in the Knights' dingy, subterranean media room—complete with Wi-Fi access since May 11, 2010!

"Our standing in the Less Filling division is unacceptable," Eddy said. "With the rotation we're running out there—Josh Johnson, Jon Lester, Matt Cain, Gavin Floyd and Joe Saunders . . . well, maybe not Saunders—we should be at least a .500 club, if not challengers to the Pocono throne

"If things continue along these lines, then changes will be made," Eddy warned ominously, eliciting snickers from some of the assembled Knights players, a group that included Cristian Guzman, Jason Varitek and Ty Wigginton. Those well-seasoned vets know only too well that the Knights' front office has no recourse to counter their putrid play. Trade them? Perhaps, if this were 2005.

Eddy then went on to openly petition for a "major league-caliber shortstop or reasonable facsimile," showing open disdain for Guzman and Julio Lugo, a pair of long-in-the-tooth shortstops who can manage a range rating no better than 4. The GM indicated that light-hitting Clint Barmes, a fine defensive second baseman who appears stretched when playing across the bag, would assume everyday ownership of the shortstop position, at least for the time being.

"We've seen the positive effect that a strong defense can have on a team's morale, not to mention its run differential," Eddy said. "Fans of the Seattle Mariners (of the rival American League) are positively brimming with delight now that they've been subjected to an endless succession of 2-1 defeats. That's what we're trying to do here."

Seattle Pilots Owner Dauntless, Defiant!

Seattle Post Intelligencer, 16 May 2010

An open letter from Frank Pennylegion:

"I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is
neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we
shall prove ourselves once more able to defend our Kingdome home, to ride
out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny of the Surf and
Haymakers, if necessary for years, if necessary alone.

Even though large parts of the Less Filling Conference and old and
famous Spurs have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Haymakers and all
the odious apparatus of Surf rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on
to the end, we shall fight in Troy, we shall fight on the seas and oceans of
Miami, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the
starting 5, we shall defend our Kingdome, whatever the cost may be, we shall
fight on the diamonds, we shall fight on the base paths, we shall fight in
the fields and in the dugouts, we shall fight in the bullpens; we shall
never surrender. We will never, never, never surrender!"

KGJ: Naptime Part of Visualization Technique

St Albans Messenger, 11 May 2010

In the wake of an explosive sleep-related scandal involving legendary DFW outfielder / somanambulist Ken Griffey Junior, the St Albans Messenger was able to catch up with the longtime Spurs slugger in that period just after lunch (aka "The Lunch Coma") when you either really want to take a nap, or alternatively you want to hit 5th in a 1pm game, facing the fastest moving baseballs on the planet and attempting to utilize a round stick of wood to forcibly redirect said baseballs onto a 90 degree slice of turf defended by 9 elite athletes.

When we caught up with Griffey (.156/1/4 in 45 ab's) in the 7th inning of the recent DFW-LCC tilt, Junior was sitting on the end of the visitor's dugout bench comfortably snuggled into his officially licensed Spurs Snuggie (tm). Alarmed at first at Junior's lack of response to stimuli such as loudly calling his name, shaking him by the shoulders, flicking the lights on and off, and pulling the pillow out from underneath his head, our roving reporter quickly called for the Spurs team trainer and SleepNumber Mattress spokesperson, Lyndsey Wagner.

Wagner quickly quelled our concerns by holding a mirror in front of KGJ's mouth and showing us that it fogged up in just a few seconds. "See?" said Wagner, "Junior's not dead, he's just getting his game face on. As you well know, visualization is an important part of success in the batter's box. And what else is REM sleep (the most restful and restorative form of sleep, and the part in which dreaming takes place) if not just an elaborate form of visualization?"

"You see, if we want Junior to hit a homerun in his pinch-hit appearance in the 9th, what we tpyically do is induce a deep trancelike state in him in the 5th. Since we've found the agile-minded Junior to be immune to classical hypnosis, we find the best way to induce this pre-visualization trance is to give him a nice warm glass of milk and tell him a beddy-bye story (currently his favorite is "If you Give a Moose a Muffin.") In the rare event this doesn't work, that's when we really break out the big guns. We're talking lullabye's here, "Rockabye Junior / on the Treetop," the whole nine yards. Maybe we even have him count some sheep. But sometimes we run into trouble with that strategy, because he'll get as far as 1-2 and then just start taking sheep pitches until there's a full count. Then all it takes is one more high and inside sheep, and then he think's he's drawn a sleep-walk. Total somnambulism - he just starts heading to first base. More than once we've had to tackle him, which breaks the trance and pretty much ruins any chance he had for a full visualization of his upcoming pinch-hit at-bat."

Intrigued by this unexpected story line (here we just thought maybe he was hung over or something and wanted to catch some Z's), we then asked the next obvious question: Does anyone ever play any pranks on Griffey while he's asleep?

Rolling her eyes, trainer / mattress huckster Lindsay Wagner (sleep number: 49) said "Yes, yes of course. As trainer, I try to keep things like that from happening as much as possible. I mean sure, the old 'spray shaving cream in the sleeping Junior's palm and then tickle his nose with a feather' seems funny to the other benchwarmers, but they're not the ones that have to try to drag a groggy Griffey to the eyewash station to get the Barbasol out of his million-dollar retinas."

"And the rumors that Freddy Sanchez is on the trade block mostly because of a gag involving a warm bowl of water and a messy biohazard cleanup? Well, let's just say there's more than a little truth to that."

Throughout his own in-game interview, Ken Griffey Jr was lightly snoring and could not be reached for comment.

END OF AN ERA - After Another Poor Start, Knights to Be Sold

(Special to the New York Daily Mirror - May 12, 2010)

NEW YORK - After the last out was made in the 1957 MLB season, New York City bemoaned the loss of two of its most beloved sports franchises - the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants were moving westward. Although neither team had won the NL pennant that season, they were interwoven with the city's fabric and their recent championships (the Giants in 1954 and the Dodgers in 1955) made their departures especially painful. To make matters worse, the Dodgers won three more championships in short order after moving to Los Angeles. The Giants have yet to win their first title after over 50 years in the City by the Bay.

Now it appears that New York will once again be losing a sports franchise, though one with much less success, tenure or fan affection than the Dodgers or Giants ever experienced. After a league-worst 16-30 start to the 2010 NASBL season, the Pak family, primary owners of the Knights, have announced their intention to withdraw from the league as soon as possible. The league front office has already been notified and reports indicate that an active search for new ownership is underway.

In a formal statement to the New York media, a spokesman for the Pak family said that "the family thought long and hard about this decision, but ultimately concluded that it was time to go in a different direction."

GM Mitch Pak, whose failure to get the team close to the playoffs even once in his nine seasons at the helm, has been instructed not to make any trades pending the ownership transfer. He was not available for comment as we went to press.

Team insiders were unsurprised at this move. "The Paks got into this league with the intention of bringing a championship to New York. After '07 they thought they were finally heading there, but then came Barry Zito and '08. They've been talking about getting out since then. Even with the new stadium, the Knights are a money-losing proposition to the family and they feel their energies would be better served elsewhere." The team had no official comment on rumors that the family had taken a big hit in the Bernard Madoff scandal and are in financially dire straits.

There is speculation that the league wants the Paks to run the team normally for the time being and that the new ownership search will go into high gear after the '10 season is completed. Reclusive owners Samuel Z. and Ethan Pak are said to be agreeable to this plan but have already publicly stated that they do not they want to run this club in 2011.

Initial fan reaction was mixed. On the Knights' website fan message board, a straw poll measuring the fans thoughts about the team's demise found that 42% of those responding were willing to say "good riddance" to the star-crossed Knights while just 28% wanted for the team to stay put. 30% remained undecided.

The Knights came into being in the 2000-2001 offseason, when the Pak family was awarded the rights to the moribund North Celtic Druids, a dreadful club (even by LF Central standards) that never won more than 62 games in its existence and lost 122 games in 1999. The family immediately moved the club to New York, where they were renamed the Knights and started play in the '01 season in creaky old Empire Field, a leftover relic from the Robert Moses era.
