Griz Fans Happy - Could be Happier

Grundy County is heading to the postseason for the second straight year and things couldn't be better, right? The Griz have an 8 1/2 game lead on Vermont and a Magic Number of 16 with 23 games to play.

Not so fast says Griz owner - Jack Howard - Justin Rabidoux's Fighting Souix are not out of it. Howard points out that the Sioux put together a good Block 3; winning 22 of 35 games and pushing their team win total to 73. The Griz on the other hand have been slipping and only won 13 of 36 in Block 3 and ending the Block with 82 wins. If those two teams repeat those block percentages in Block 4 Vermont would pull within 3 games of the division title. If the Griz continue their downhill spiral at the rate they have been falling the momentum going downhill is like a fatman (Jack resembles that remark) walking downhill toward a cliff. The Fiighting Sioux seem to have fresh horse for their drive up the very same hill.

Griz fans looked at the team's Block 1 results and thought a 100 win season was in sight for the first time. With 23 games to play and 82 wins - and most games on the road - it appears GCG will be happy to win 90. Jack points out we went from best league record to mediocre in Block 3. The Troy Haymakers are the team to beat (if you can) sitting with a 95 - 44 record. They could fall over and still pull out 100+ wins. Leigh Valley Iron Pigs are also looking to collect 100 wins, needing only 8 in the last Block to surpass that. Even Lake Champlain and Springfield have accumulated 4 more wins than the Griz.

Griz fans are hoping the downhill spiral ends soons and that Jack Howard can right the ship - even if the league has passd the trade deadline. Griz will have to overcome the losses of Rookie Sensation - RHP Tim Stauffer and Relief Pitcher Extrodinaire - Jason Motte who will sit out Block 4 to rest their arms and avoid overusage. Howard said we will miss them as their records demonstrate. Motte has 0.82 ERA in 44 IP and Stauffer's ERA is 1.98 over 77 innings. They are our 2 best pitchers this year. Griz activated Justin Morneau for Block 4 after resting him in Block 3. He will play regularily the rest of the way out which should help our offense. Howard said he hopes the cold streak is over and that the Griz warm up to defend their division title. We hope to make the playoffs and see what will happen from there.

Why Did Outlaw Stand Pat?

Outlaw Josey Wales ended block II with a decent lead over division rival Lehigh Valley and a solid lead in the Tastes Great wild card race. The team got some good trade offers that would have improved our chances of making and succeeding in the playoffs.

So why, oh why, did the Wales stand pat while contenders Lehigh Valley and Springfield were making aggressive moves to close the gap? Why are the Wales now 5 games behind the Iron Pigs and fighting neck-and-neck with Springfield and Lake Champlain for the wild card after block III?

What was management thinking?

The answer is .983 .976 .970 .965 .872 .852 .823

Those numbers are the current 2011 MLB OPS for Big Papi Ortiz, Mike Napoli, Matt Kemp, Adrian Gonzalez, Dustin Pedroia, Nelson Cruz, and Adrian Beltre. Manager Hildebrant is salivating at the thought of putting together lineup cards with those guys names next year. The pitching staff might not be spectacular next year, but with Justin Masterson, Tim Hudson, and Scott Baker all having good MLB campaigns it should be solid enough to give the lineup a chance to outslug the opposition and overcome all of Elvis Andrus's errors.

And never forget our most potent weapon, the ageless legend Omar Vizquel! About
the only 2011 MLB disappointment is Joakim Soria who is struggling this year, maybe leading to a Venters vs. Soria closer controversy next year.

Outlaw officials looked at this year's pitching staff vs the oppositions' and made the tough decision to stand pat. Rumor has it that management actually considered being the first team in NASBL history to be sellers in the trade market while leadin
g their division after 2 blocks! The 2011 Wales players will just have to keep overachieving if they want to go anywhere. Their record this year shows evidence that they can do just that.

So while Outlaw fans may not be happy with this year's lack of moves, management says the team still has a great chance to make the playoffs this year and expects even better things to come next year.

Sabathia Passes Pedro for 3rd on Wins List

Springfield (AP) – Entering the 2002 NASBL free agent draft, the Springfield Isotopes were two years removed from NASBL’s first expansion draft, had yet to post a winning record in NASBL and had two picks in the 1st round. In this draft the Topes selected a pitcher who in Block 3 passed Pedro Martinez for third place on the all time wins list.

Holding the 2nd pick in the draft, Topes GM Doug Sherlag hoped that he was drafting his future ace in when he selected Barry Zito. It looked like this was the case, as Zito went an astounding 59-24 in his first three years with the Topes.

Little did Sherlag know that the Topes’ next first round selection would prove to be the long-term ace that the Topes were looking for. After the Springfield Isotopes selected C.C. Sabathia with its 2nd first round pick in the 2002 NASBL draft, Sabathia started his NASBL career rather inauspiciously posting a 10-7 record with a 4.95 ERA in his rookie campaign for the Topes. During his 2nd season for the Topes, Sabathia seemed on the verge of stardom, posting a strong 15-9 record with a 4.28 ERA. However, Sabathia took a significant step back during the 2004 campaign, posting a 9-11 record with a 6.04 ERA.

After the 2004 season, GM Doug Sherlag decided to deal one of his first round pitchers from the 2002 draft and anoint an ace. In a shocking move at the time, during the off-season the Topes dealt Barry Zito and handed the ball to Sabathia on Opening Day of the 2005 NASBL season. “People thought we were crazy, but our scouts thought that C.C. was special and that Zito was over performing. I put my faith in our scouts and made what ended up being a great deal for the Topes,” opines Sherlag.

Things looked dicey when C.C. went 10-10 with a 5.10 ERA in 2005, but after that season, Sabathia hasn’t looked back. Since 2005, Sabathia has gone 115-50 with a 3.88 ERA in 1421.7 innings for Springfield and won the 2007 Cy Young Award. If C.C. can keep up his recent pace, he projects to pass up Randy Johnson for the all time leader in career wins in three-four more years, which should guarantee C.C. a plaque in the NASBL Hall of Fame.

“I couldn’t be prouder of C.C. and I can tell you this…he’s not going anywhere. It is our goal to have C.C. retire as a Tope” said Sherlag.

What was the biggest lead??

Troy, NY: The Haymakers have embarked on what seems to be a historic season. Since the team has already mathematically won the Less Filling West, the sports department wondered if there was a record of how early a team has won a division. With that data not readily available, we thought we would take a look at the top 5 division wins in the history of the league. Here they are in reverse order:

5. 2008 Pocono Chin Music (87-75): Don't let the record fool you; the Chin Music who were lead by Prince Fielder and John Smoltz, coasted to a 23 game division win in the Less Filling central. Fielder carried the lineup with 57 homeruns and had 140 RBI's. John Smoltz was 18-7 with a 3.31 ERA.

4. 2004 Canyon Country Cannons (101-61): The Cannons powerhouse offense won the division by 25 games. With powerhouses like Jeff Kent (.332/37/112), Jason Giambi (.285/40/100), Vernon Wells (.306/23/92) and speedsters Kenny Lofton and Ichiro at the top of the lineup it's easy to see how this team could win 100 games. It also didn't hurt that Kerry Wood went 20-4 with a 2.81 ERA.

3. 2003 New Jersey Trash Heap (111-51): The '03 Trash Heap repeated as division winners, leading by a whopping 25.5 games. The team's 111 wins was also good for the third most in league history. There were very little weaknesses on this team who boasted an all-star lineup from top to bottom; with players like Roberto Alomar, Gary Sheffield, Luis Gonzalez and Fred McGriff. It was A-Rod though who was the star of the show; hitting .302 with 58 homers and an amazing 150 RBI's. With a lineup like that it's easy to see why Randy Johnson went an incredible 27-7 that season with 21 complete games. Even Jeff Weaver went 16-3, with a tepid 4.94 ERA.

2. 2002 New Jersey Trash Heap (114-48): The Trash Heap held a mini-dynasty back in 2002 and 2003 with two record seasons. Their 114 wins in '02 were good enough for the most in league history. With basically the same lineup in 2003, it was Luis Gonzalez's turn to be the star with 61 home runs and 173 runs batted in; although teammate A-Rod didn't disappoint by hitting 58 home runs and driving in 161. The Trash Heap also boasted three 20 game winners while every starting pitcher had at least 15 wins. Even though the team looked to have the best offense in the history of the league and ended up with the best regular season record in the history of the league, they didn't finish with the biggest division lead. That record went to:

1. 2006 Springfield Isotopes (112-50): The '06 Isotopes finished with the second best regular season record in league history and finished a whopping 37 games ahead of second place Lake Champlain. The team was a great mix of power, speed, pitching and defense with players like Rafael Furcal, Kenny Lofton, Brian Roberts, Eric Chavez and Lance Berkman it was a tough out up and down the lineup. Part-time player Tony Clark ripped 42 homeruns and drive in 105 in only 344 at bats! The pitching staff was great too as every starter pulled down 14 wins; AJ Burnett went 21-5 with a solid 3.43 ERA, while stud closer Joe Nathan saved 40 games while boasting an ERA under 2.00.

So where will the Haymakers fall on this list? Barring a monumental collapse, it seems somewhere in the top three.

More importantly, how do these big division leads translate into the playoffs? Without the information readily available, it's hard to tell...hopefully some of these record setting managers will share their stories of triumph or heartache.

Godzilla Breaks Up Hudson No-No

Tim "chicks dig the longball"
Hudson, career NASBL homerun
record holder for pitchers,
narrowly missed his first NASBL
no-hitter when Lake Champlain's
Godzilla laced a ringing double in
the seventh inning. Hudson must
have LCC's number as Lake
Champlain was the team that
Hudson cranked his record breaking
long ball against last August. Matsui's
double was the only blemish in
Hudson's complete game shutout.

Outlaw GM Hildebrant quickly proclaimed
every remaining Hudson start at Wreckin'
So Field this year to be a nickel whiskey
night in recognition of Hudson's accomplishments
and contributions to the franchise.

Outlaw Josey Wales beat the Lake Champlain Cannibals 4 to 0.

Hudson(12-11) was tremendous on the mound for Outlaw. He gave up just 1 hit

up by Hideki Matsui who doubled with nobody out in the 7th inning. Outlaw
finished with 8 hits in the victory.

Drew Storen was great in relief as the Freedonia Fireflies defeated the Pocono
Chin Music 6 to 3 at Thunderdome.

Freedonia jumped on top to stay in the top of the 6th inning plating one
baserunner on 2 base hits. The Pocono offense proved no trouble in the
bottom of the 9th.

The victory went to Johnny Cueto(4-15) who went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing 3
runs. Cueto was helped out by Storen who recorded his 2nd save. Tommy
Hunter(4-4) was hit with the loss.

The win by Freedonia is a very welcome one as they have been struggling in
recent days. Their record now stands at 37-70 - only 2-8 in their last ten
games. Not able to get much going in recent weeks, Pocono is 2-8 of late and
now has an overall record of 47-73.

WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Ben Zobrist robbed Johnny Damon of a base hit.

Cliff Lee whiffed 11 batters and first baseman Mark Teixeira had 4 hits and 2
RBI at Thunderdome where the Seattle Pilots beat the slumping Pocono Chin
Music in 15 innings 4 to 3.

The score was tied at 2 after nine. Seattle won it in the 15th inning. After
two outs Ichiro Suzuki slapped a one-base hit. Suzuki was safe on a stolen
base. David Dejesus then lined a base-hit. Teixeira stepped in and he
doubled. Alfonso Soriano dug into the batters box next, but he struck out.
Pocono out-hit Seattle 15 to 11, but Seattle ended up with more runs.

The victory went to Jason Berken(2-2) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.
Berken got help from Mark Buehrle who earned his 1st save. Zach
Braddock(0-3) was the loser in relief.

With this win, Seattle has a 49-60 record. They have been 6-4 lately. Pocono
can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now they have a miserable
0-10 record over the last couple weeks.
