Tonight Vermont parties like it's 2006!!

Jeff Suppan turned back the clock a few years and gave the home fans about as good of a performance that could expect from this veteran. Soup went 8 2/3 before yielding to Ramon Ramirez who got Even Longoria to fly out to the warning track with the bases loaded.

Vermont's 8-4 win was built by 3R HRs in each of the first two innings by Chris Snyder and Carlos Quentin (former Piggie gains revenge reads sub-headline). Quentin reached base safely in all 5 trips to the plate, almost as if he knew what pitches were coming. Perhaps the signs Coach/GM Kevin Burns flashes to the catcher did not change in the offseason?

Jon Garland completed the game without help from the bullpen and Alexi Casilla
left the yard and had 2 RBI as the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs defeated the
Vermont Fighting Sioux by a score of 8 to 4 at Fighting Sioux Field.

Lehigh Valley came up with 4 runs in the 5th inning with the help of 4 hits.
The highlight belonged to Chase Headley who deflated the spirits of the home
town crowd when he lashed a single scoring two baserunners. Lehigh Valley
had a total of 15 hits for the game.

Garland(1-1) allowed 4 runs on the game. Braden Looper(1-1) took the loss. He
got hit hard, allowing 11 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Vermont homers past Miami

The Vermont Fighting Sioux faced multiple big deficits, and each time found an answer - the long ball.

Down 4-0 in the 5th, Carlos Quentin whacked a 3R bomb. Down 7-3 in the 8th, Raul Ibanez hit a PH grand slam. With the scored tied at 7 in the bottom of the 9th, Jody Gerut hit his 2nd HR of the year, a 2 run game winning bomb off Frank Francisco.

But all of those things pale to what Surf DH Carlos Lee achieved. Lee was 0-0 with 3 runs scored thanks to an amazing 5 walks, coming up 1 short of the MLB mark, last tied by Jimmy Foxx in 1938.

Earl Weaver always said all it took was pitching, defense and a three-run homer. Well, for this game, Vermont will gladly take a one for three in Weaverisms.

Jody Gerut hit 3 doubles and Ervin Santana struck out 10 batters as the
Vermont Fighting Sioux topped the New Jersey Trash Heap by a score of 8 to 6
at Fighting Sioux Field.

Santana(4-1) gave Vermont a solid outing. He surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks
in 7 and 1/3 innings. Vermont totaled 10 hits on the night.

Joel Hanrahan earned the save, his 2nd. Kyle Lohse(0-1) was charged with the
loss. He allowed Vermont 8 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings of work.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Santana - except New Jersey. John
Moscariello lamented, 'He just was 'on' tonight. He was keeping our guys off
balance all game. A fine game by a good strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun
game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were the visitors!'

Vermont answers NJT's 9th inning rally with one of its own

With the score tied at 6 after 8, the offenses took over. New Jersey plated 3 in the top but a persistent Sioux squad had all 6 of their batters reach base safely in the bottom of the 9th with Albert Pujols getting the GWRBI on a double off J Howell.

Fighting Sioux won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the New Jersey
Trash Heap by the count of 10 to 9.

Vermont came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning as they scored 4 runs
on 4 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Raul Ibanez who made
the Vermont fans a happy lot when he doubled plating two runs. This was the
kind of game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 6 times.

The victory was credited to Hideki Okajima(2-0) who went 1 inning, allowing 2
runs. J.P. Howell(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief.

Vermont edges Jersey in Pitcher vs. Pitchers Duel

Carlos Quentin doubled home PR Jack Wilson for the winning run in the bottom of the 11th giving VFS a 3-2 win over NJT. Quentin was 2-4 with 2 RBIs.

But the real star of the game was Trash Heap pitcher Tim Lincecum. Tiny Tim pitched all 10 1/3 innings for NJT giving up 8 hits and K-ing an impressive 14. It took all of Vermont's pitching chops to match 0s with Lincecum. Vermont starter Braden Looper was effective through 5 2/3 and pulled after allowing a 2R HR to ARod. The Sioux bullpen car got lots of mileage, carting in 4 relievers. The fab-4 pitched 1 hit ball the rest of the way with BJ Ryan getting the win with 2 solid relief innings.

V14 FAQ/Info

With the '09 NASBL season upon us, a few refresher items that may help out:

1. Version 14 Baseball Users Upgrading From A Prior Version Please Note:

Do not use any old shortcut icons or icons for the old Legacy Version. Please click on the Start button, then All Programs and find the proper icon for the Version 14 game. It will be a White Baseball icon labeled CD-ROM baseball. Do not use the old blue batter icon any longer, it will cause problems with Version 14. SOM V14 no longer supports the old Legacy Version - it will not work on your computer!!

2. Blogger Update: After your game is finished and you're taken to the box score there are a few options (save, print, close, save as, blog). When you click on 'blog', a small window opens. Make sure you're connected to the internet before proceeding. You're prompted to enter you blogger account ID and password. Note: They should be the same you set up when you created your blogger account to use NASBL's blog, http://nasbl-league.blogspot.com/. In the field to enter your blog's name, enter nasbl-league, and nothing else. It doesn't want the full URL, just the web site prefix, which is the name of the blog. You then can enter a title for your posting and any optional text that will show up above the box score in your post, however both these items are optional. You no longer have to cut/paste from a saved box score text file into the blog as a new post. If you are going to go that way, make sure to use the [CODE] and [\CODE] commands before and after the text you want to appear to ensure proper formatting.

3. Operating Systems: SOM no longer supports older versions of Windows like Win98 and there a few known Vista issues. I don't have Vista but read enough about it in the forums to know issues exist. Hopefully the recent patch will fix some/most of them, but if you have a recurring problem and think it's OS related, email SOM (som1@ix.netcom.com). Their support is responsive and helpful.

If you have other issues/fixes, share with the league and I'm sure you'll find someone who's had the same problem as you and can point you in the right direction.

Griz Caught in Own Draft Bear Trap

The Grizzlies went into the 2009 draft anticipating some nice possibilities. With the 4th overall pick we weighed what we considered the top four available players on the Bear’s Draft Board: Evan Longoria, Jay Bruce, Geovany Soto, and Justin Upton. As I prepared for the draft, I played out many scenarios.

What Actually Happened:

1st Pick - I was sure Mr. Pak would take Longoria. Sure Garrett Atkins manned the Knight’s hot corner, but Longoria would be an upgrade from good to great. Mr. Pak had taken Grady Sizemore with his last first overall pick, which has turned into a great pick and I was sure Longoria would be the same. I was stunned that Mr. Pak took Jon Lester, a LHSP. Not because he wasn’t a good pick (and one I was considering if I went with pitching first), but because I valued Longoria that much. Taking Lester may be another great move, but it upset my draft and now and guaranteed me that at least two of my top 4 picks would be available at my turn.

2nd Pick – Mr. Anderson entered the draft site and Malachi (messenger/angel) announced Soto to handle his future catching needs. The choice should align the numbers in Troy’s matrix. Soto will help the Haymakers dodge the Smiths and last place – 1st overall draft pick in the future. The pick also Switch(ed) Haymaker’s fans Morpheus (Greek God of Dreams) from bad to good. Troy’s pick is a very positive rebuilding move.

3rd Pick – The league’s newest member – Kevin traded into this pick by giving up a very offensive force. He began his sophomore season picking Longoria. How could he resist. How many times do I need to express my opinion that Longoria was the best player available. Kevin in turned flipped a player or two and picked up Upton. Two huge rebuilding blocks for a post season entry last year. Kevin is not shy when it comes to trading, I know. He has changed the face of his team more than once. His moves or depth defying. He is happy as a pig in $h!T.

4th Pick – Bruce or Upton – who do I take? Red laughs at my right handed batters. Ok, I will take Bruce. That was who I figured I would take all last summer. Perfect – good LHB with a future, plays OF, I need help there, I will announce it. No – I better think on it. Wouldn’t it be neat to put the brothers Upton together. Ok – I also considered that possibility last summer. Either will improve my offense for the future, and should help me now. At least that is what I think.
Wait a minute – I need pitching. I cut down to 4 pitchers and only drafted one RP in the supplemental draft. Pitching is my weakness – no doubt about it. Cliff Lee – stud LHSP this year, could put me over the top. He could possibly win 20 games with my lineup. Negative fact - Lee is older than I wanted to add to my roster with a first pick – I also like Garza, Kuroda is solid and old; several good pitchers available. If I take Bruce or Upton, I am sure I can pick up one solid SP in the next round. Before and during the draft I considered trading with Lehigh Valley to pick up one or more early picks. What to do. Mosco wants my pick to make sure he gets Bruce. Possible trade there. Hmmmmmmmmmm.
Ok – team needs dictate SP, I need at least 2 solid performers to help my team the most. I also need RP/closer, can’t wait to long. Trapped by my own roster. OK – Griz take Garza.

5th pick New Jersey and John Moscariello are giddy to get Bruce – enough said.

In a close game the sizzling Vermont Fighting Sioux got by the Dallas Ft Worth
Spurs by the score of 6 to 4.

The Vermont fans enjoyed the offense provided by Mike Aviles. He doubled in
the 1st inning and launched a Grand Slam homerun (his 2nd of the season) in
the 4th inning. Despite losing, Dallas Ft Worth out-hit Vermont 14 to 9.

The win went to Ubaldo Jimenez(3-1) who allowed 4 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings.
Hideki Okajima gained credit for his 1st save. Jamie Moyer(1-1) was tagged
with the loss. Vermont scored big getting 6 runs off him in 3 and 2/3
innings.

'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Jimenez, 'I was
just giving us a chance to win.'

Zimmerman's PH 2b in 9th pushed Vermont past Spurs

Ryan Zimmerman, he of the 1st inning heroics, decided to contribute at the end of the game for once. Zimmerman was inserted as a pinch hitter for Adam Jones with PR Coco Crisp on second (courtesy of a lead-off double by Casey Blake) when he blasted an x-chart double over the head of DFW CF Denard Span giving Vermont the 5-4 win.

Vermont was cruising along with a 3-0 lead behind a sac fly and 2R HR from Albert Pujols when they ran into trouble in the 8th. Effective starter Ervin Santana was pulled (to a round of boos from the inebriated home fans) for Hiedki Okijima. Oki got zero outs and gave up 2 hits and was pulled for JC Romero. Before it was over, the Spurs had a 4-3 lead after the top of the 8th.

Vermont scored the tying run in the bottom of the 8th off an overmatched Heath Bell (the eventual loser). Greg Maddux was effective for the Spurs, yielding 4 runs in his 7 innings of work.
