The Vermont Fighting Sioux faced multiple big deficits, and each time found an answer - the long ball. Down 4-0 in the 5th, Carlos Quentin whacked a 3R bomb. Down 7-3 in the 8th, Raul Ibanez hit a PH grand slam. With the scored tied at 7 in the bottom of the 9th, Jody Gerut hit his 2nd HR of the year, a 2 run game winning bomb off Frank Francisco. But all of those things pale to what Surf DH Carlos Lee achieved. Lee was 0-0 with 3 runs scored thanks to an amazing 5 walks, coming up 1 short of the MLB mark, last tied by Jimmy Foxx in 1938. Earl Weaver always said all it took was pitching, defense and a three-run homer. Well, for this game, Vermont will gladly take a one for three in Weaverisms. |
