Hawaiians and Isotopes go to war
No better way to open the home season at Pietruska Park then to have the hated Isotopes come to town for a four game set.
In Game 1, Hawaiians defeated the Topes 4 to 2 behind Jair Jurrjens's fine performance for Honolulu. He went 6 and 2/3 innings surrendering 4 hits and 4 walks. Jurrjens recorded 8 strikeouts. Scott Feldman(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He was knocked around by Honolulu, allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.
Game 2, saw Honolulu get handcuffed by CC Sabathia who allowed only 4 hits through 8 innings enroute to a 4-1 Springfield victory. Shin-soo Choo had 2 hits for the Topes while Brendan Ryan knocked in a pair.
Game 3, saw the Isotopes offense get going at the expense of Roy Oswalt's ERA. The home pitcher gave up 8 runs in 6 1/3. Clayton Richard came on to throw gasoline on the fire as the Topes torched him for 5 more runs in 2 2/3 on their way to a 13-5 thrashing of the boys of Aloha. Adam Dunn was 4 for 6 with 5 ribbys and his buddy Lance Berkman was 3 for 5 with 5 ribbys. Jason Marquis got the win despite allowing 15 baserunners in 6 2/3.
A nasty crowd gathered for Game 4 and the Hawaiians came out in a foul mood. The wind was blowing out and so were alot of baseballs as the Hawaiians came back from an early 4-1 deficit to thrash the Topes 20-8. Justin Verlander went the distance but clearly didnt have his best stuff allowing all 8 SPR runs. The Hawaiian offnse greeted AJ Burnett rather rudely, chasing him in the second with a 6 spot. They also threw 8 runs up in the 8th for good measure laying a beating on Danys Baez. Every Hawaiian hitter stroked at least one single, while Miguel Tejada had four hits and Scott Rolen scored 5 runs, knocked in 4 and had two round trippers.
The Hawaiians will face the Road Kill in their next series and hope to get their pitching back on track after a shaky opening series.
