Haymakers Motorin'

Troy, NY: Rarely does a General Manager's plan for a season ever work like they should. The quote about the best laid plans comes to mind. There is always an x-factor, either a freak injury or an important player has a down year which almost always derails the train and an adjustment needs to be made to keep a team pushing to the playoffs. But the Haymakers 5th year GM Ken Anderson seems to be laughing in the face of Robert Burns so far this season. Everything seems to be working for Troy; through 102 games they currently sit at 72-30, the best record in the league.

The biggest reason for their success has been due to the outstanding bats of Josh Hamilton and Jose Bautista. Bautista, who came into this season with a career 40 homeruns, has exploded for 32 so far this season and is tied for the league lead. He has driven in 84, six behind league leader and teammate Josh Hamilton who has 90 in only 102 games. Hamilton is having an outstanding season, sporting a league best .394 BA, with 40 doubles and 24 homeruns. In one epic three game series at Pietruska Park on July 15-17, Josh went 11 for 14 with 7 homeruns and 20 RBI's. The Haymakers aptly swept the series, and this reporter is going to go out on a limb and say that was probably the best offensive production in a three games series in the history of the league. Both players have been contributing nicely to a

team with a league best .274 team average.

That kind of offensive production usually makes the lives of a pitching staff much easier, and the arms of Troy are not disappointing. The team is second in the league in ERA at 3.35, and are lead by staff ace Chris Carpenter who is 13-3 with a 3.58 ERA. Newcomer Francisco Liriano, who was picked up in a trade for Homer Bailey and a draft pick, is 7-1

with a 2.20 ERA in 11 starts with the team. The bullpen has been doing their job by taking advantage of their ability to matchup against their opponents. The group of wily veterans are 21-10 with a 2.87 ERA are led by setup man Mike Adams. Through 34.2 innings Adams sports a 0.26 ERA and is 3-0.

The team has been great in the field as well. The anchor of the defense is 2Bman Brandon Phillips, who has been a vacuum all season. The combined up the middle defense had made a

total of 4 errors, and the team as a whole had made a league low 36 errors while being tied for the league lead in turning 122 double plays.

Take that great hitting and good pitching, combine that with a league best fielding percentage of .991 and it's hard to find something bad to say about anything going on in Troy this summer.

Robinson Cano smacked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs
beat the Pocono Chin Music by a score of 9 to 2.
 
Cano had a big day against Pocono.  He stroked a one-base hit in the 4th
inning, clubbed a solo home run in the 5th inning and lost the ball over the
fence for three runs in the 7th inning.  For the game Lehigh Valley out-hit
Pocono 12 to 7.  
 
The win was credited to Daisuke Matsuzaka(3-1) who went 6 and 1/3 innings
allowing 2 runs. Barry Zito(3-9) was charged with the loss.  He got hammered,
allowing 10 hits and 4 walks in 6 innings.  
 
For Lehigh Valley the victory was a welcome one, indeed.  They had been
struggling in their last ten games with a disappointing 2-8 record.  Pocono
has a record of 35-51 after the loss.

Jaime Garcia had a complete game as the Pocono Chin Music defeated the Lehigh
Valley Iron Pigs 5 to 3 at Thunderdome.
 
The game started off with Pocono taking the lead in the first scoring 2
runners on 2 hits.  Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning.
 
Garcia(8-4) got the victory, allowing 3 runs for the game. Clay Buchholz(5-3)
suffered the loss.  He surrendered 5 runs and 7 hits in 8 innings.

Hiroki Kuroda(5-2) gave Lehigh Valley a solid outing.  He went 6 and 2/3
innings and surrended up 6 hits and 4 walks.  The Lehigh Valley offense
man-handled the Pocono pitching staff as they scored in 7 of the 9 innings.
 
Bronson Arroyo(7-10) was tagged with the loss.  He was hit hard and gave up 15
hits and 3 walks in 7 innings.  'It's been a rough ride lately, but this was
a good win for us' said Kevin Burns, 'Maybe this will put us back on track.'

John Jaso blasted 2 homeruns as the Pocono Chin Music defeated the Honolulu
Hawaiians by a score of 3 to 2 at Thunderdome.
 
Pocono jumped on top to stay in the 3rd inning scoring one runner.  Honolulu
threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.  
 
The winning pitcher was Dan Haren(6-10) who allowed 2 runs in 8 innings. Haren
was helped out by John Axford who recorded his 19th save.  Roy Oswalt(3-3)
was the losing pitcher.  He allowed 5 hits and 1 walk in 6 and 1/3 innings.
 
Stan Pietruska was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts.  If our
guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.
That is what really ticks me off!'

In a one-sided affair the Honolulu Hawaiians batters pounded the Pocono Chin
Music pitchers for 10 runs while Justin Verlander(4-3), with relief help from
Darren O'Day, surrendered 2 runs to Pocono.
 
Verlander gave a fine effort for Honolulu.  He surrendered 8 hits and 2 walks
in 7 and 1/3 innings.  Honolulu had 15 hits for the night while Pocono had
10.  
 
Nelson Figueroa(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  He surrendered 5 runs and 7 hits
in 5 and 1/3 innings.

19,791 fans were treated to a fine game at Thunderdome as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The Honolulu Hawaiians put a halt to
their 6 game losing streak and won by the slimmest of margins, 5 to
4.
 
Honolulu had the winning rally in the 8th inning plating 3 runs using 3 hits.
Andrew McCutchen started the attack as he cracked a solo homerun.  Daric
Barton was next and he stroked a base-hit.  Jayson Werth struck out, unable
to help the rally.  Scott Rolen followed next and he cleared the fences for a
two-run home run.  Austin Jackson was next to the plate, but was promptly
struck out.  Pocono had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up
short.  
 
Johan Santana(3-2) got the win allowing 2 runs in 8 innings. Mariano Rivera
was credited with his 12th save.  Luke Gregerson(2-4) absorbed the loss in
relief.  He surrendered 3 runs and 3 hits in 1/3 of an inning.  
 
'We really needed this win' said Stan Pietruska.  'That first drink of water
at the end of a drought sure does taste good!'
