Sioux tops Champs in 13

The Vermont Fighting Sioux drove across the winning run in the 13th inning to defeat the Springfield Isotopes 5-4 in an exciting game.

Jack Cust hit 2 HRs for SPR, a solo shot tying the game in the 7th and a 3R blast in the 9th off Sioux closer BJ Ryan giving the 'Topes a 4-2 lead, a lead their closer Jonathan Papelbon could not hold.

By the end of the game all Vermont emptied its bench of position players and the box score witnessed an at bat by BJ Ryan necessitated by the bench-emptying 9th inning in an all out effort to tie/win the game.

Good start to this series. The stands were packed with Vermont fans pining to get a look at a winning franchise, albeit the visiting NASBL World Series Champion Isotopes.

by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.

The score was tied at 4 after nine. Vermont came out on top in the 13th
inning. Albert Pujols drew a walk. Kelly Shoppach next to the plate and he
doubled. Matt Joyce then laced a one-base hit giving Vermont the win much to
the delight of the home town crowd. Vermont rapped out 10 hits for the
night.

Joel Hanrahan(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Jeff
Bennett(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. Jack Cust slammed 2 homeruns
and had 4 RBI for Springfield but his effort was wasted in the loss.

Vermont completes mini-sweep vs. Outlaw

Ryan Zimmerman did it again. For the second time this season Zimmerman had a first inning bases clearing double plating runs 3-4-5 for the Sioux and chasing battered OJW starter Greg Smith (1/3 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 ER).

Looked to be easy sailing for Vermont, but they did not score again and had to withstand the powerful Outlaw lineup, no easy task. OJW plated 2 runs in the 2nd and 5th innings, but could not pull even with Vermont winning 5-4.
