The DFW Spurs announce the signing of their 2014 1st round
Draft pick in a news conference this afternoon. Even though the Draft is still
a month away the media were all feeling a little deja vu. Back in 2012 the
Spurs through a series of trades had the 4th in the draft. "We were all set to
draft Freddie Freeman" stated the skipper of the Spurs Red Robbins, but just
before the draft GRK made a trade to get the 2nd overall pick. "I just knew
Johnny was going to take Freddie" so we decided to go in a completely different
direction. We took a page out of the OJW playbook. The year before OJW hit a
big Home run when they traded their 1st round pick for Matt Kemp. Back in 2010
the Spurs coveted CF Andrew McCutchen, however didn't have a 1st round pick so
HHA took him with the 10th pick. The next year in the 2011 draft with the 9th
pick HHA took CF Austin Jackson. "So thinking Freeman wouldn't be there at pick
4, we contacted HHA in a trade which turned out to be McCutchen and Draft
picks switching teams. After all was said and done GRK in 2012 took Carlos
Santana with the 2nd pick and Freeman fell to pick 10 where LCC gladly picked
him up. Looking back all teams are happy with the way things turned out",
Robbins said. One last factor in the 2012 draft the Spurs were looking at young
pitcher which they were very high on who was taken with pick 16 in round one by
LVI by the name of Jordan Zimmerman.
Well two years later the Spurs landed their man (again) when they traded this year's 2014 1st round pick to LVI for Zimmerman. "We looked at all the young pithers in the Draft that could step in and help us right now and who would still be avaiable at pick 14. That started the wheels turning and then one thing lead to another, so I am proud to announce the newest member of the Spurs Jordan Zimmerman"!
