OUTLAW'S TEHERAN SHARES TASTES GREAT WINS CROWN

In his first season with the Outlaw Josey Wales, Julio Teheran wildly exceeded expectations and shared the Tastes Great wins crown with Springfield's Jake Odorizzi with 18 games won.

Julio Teheran left Clayton Kershaw, Jake Arrieta, Cory Kluber, Chris Sale, teammate Carlos Carrasco, Johnny Cueto, and Gerrit Cole all eating his dust in the wins department.

Just how did a pitcher with a 4.04 MLB ERA, a 4.84 NASBL ERA, and a card resembling the firebombing of Dresden win more games than any other Tastes Great pitcher not named Jake Odorizzi while playing for a sub-.500 team in the bottom half of the league in runs scored?

1)  There's something to be said for taking the mound as often as possible.  With 33 starts, Teheran took the mound slightly more than once every five games.

2)  Earn a decision in a freakishly high 88% of his starts.  Julio earned 29 decisions in 33 starts. Pitching a respectable, but not outstanding, 5 2/3 innings per start certainly contributed to the high decision rate, but it doesn't explain it all.  Chalk up some dumb luck here.

3)  Get run support.  NASBL teams scored an average of 4.46 runs per game.  The Wales averaged only 4.44 runs per game, but when Teheran took the mound Outlaw scored a blistering 5.12 runs per game.  Chalk some of this up to dumb luck, but credit some of it up to Outlaw management making sure key batters played during Teheran's home starts after noticing his unexpected block I success.

4)  Have a wildly unbalanced card.  With a 40% on-base, 56% slugging and 5.7% homerun rate, the left side of Teheran's card does resemble the firebombing of Dresden.  But the right side is actually respectable with 20% on-base, 22% slugging, and 2.0% homerun.  While a highly unbalanced starting pitcher card is normally considered a disadvantage, Outlaw management noticed this right away and avoided starting Teheran against teams with strong left-handed lineups as much as possible.

5)  Luck.  More luck.  Dumb luck.  Smart luck.  All kinds of luck.

Haymakers Excited to Return to the Playoffs

Troy, NY:  The city is a buzz with playoff fever.  The crowds are cheering loudly, fans running the streets waiving their banners and even the mayor has declared a city holiday.  Yes it's true, the hometown Haymakers are back in the playoffs.

   The team was able to sneak out a last minute two game win on the wildcard over rival Grundy County.  The Grizzlies had a great season, lead by a strong pitching staff and superior defense. Their 96 win season would have been enough to make it in the menial Tastes Great division, where a number of teams had down years.
   As for the Haymakers, this is their first time back in the playoffs since their division winning season back in 2013 where they finished with an identical 98-64 record.  This will Troy's fourth playoff appearance since their inaugural season in 2007 as they go after their first NASBL championship. 
  The Haymakers began the year with the second pick of the draft, and eyeing a rebuild for the 2017 season, drafting a number of young bats and arms such as Aaron Sanchez, Rasial Iglesias, Yasmany Tomas, Jung Ho Kang and young superstar Kris Bryant.  These young players fit well into what already was a group of young sluggers and anchored by ace Madison Bumgarner.  There was promise, but the team was still lacking, especially in the pitching staff.  But after the end of the second block, GM Ken Anderson saw an opportunity and was able to trade for Sonny Gray as a compliment to ace Bumgaerner and stock the bullpen with good complements to lefty Andrew Miller by adding Mark Melancon and Carson Smith.
    Pitcher Gray was great down the stretch, going 9-2 in twelve starts while boasting 1.74 ERA.  The only possible negative is will be bounce ace and 20 game winner Madison Bumgarner in game one of the playoffs against Vermont.  New bullpen arms allowed the weaker back of the rotation to pitch shorter, which was evident by Smith and Melancon pitching a combined 68 innings down the stretch.  The five "nasty boys" of the pen will provide a lot of insurance for the games not pitched by Gray and Bumgarner.

 Possible rookie of the year Kris Bryant motorized the offense for Troy, belting 31 homers and driving in 104 runs while playing solid defense at thirdbase and rightfield.  But the leader and spark-plug of the offsense was centerfielder A.J. Pollock, who played gold glove defense in center hit .316 on the season with 59 extra base hits and stole 33 bases.

Even with all that talent, the Haymakers face a number of tough challenges for the NASBL crown.  They face the Fighting Souix in the first round of the playoffs, who won 100 games thanks to a balanced offense and a strong bullpen.  Their rotation is solid as well, fronted by ace Matt Harvey, the great Jon Lackey and longtime Pilots ace Felix Hernandez. It is going to prove to be a great matchup.

 Should Troy be lucky enough to make it past Vermont, they will still need to face the defending champion Spurs and their powerhouse offense led by Bryce Harper, who will no doubt be the league MVP. Harper won the Less Filling triple crown, hitting .334 with 51 home runs and driving in 128.  Not to be outdone, the Spurs also have ace lefty Dallas Keuchel, who will most likely win the Less Filling Cy Young, going 23-6 with a 2.82 ERA.

What's worse, Troy would still need to play the championship series against the Tastes Great winner if they get lucky enough to go to the finals.  It's going to be a long, fun road to the fans in the upcoming weeks.

Chris Archer struck out 14 batters as the mighty Dallas Ft Worth Spurs topped
the Lake Champlain Cannibals in 11 innings by a score of 6 to 3 at Turnpike
Stadium.

Both teams had scored 1 runs after nine full innings.  Dallas Ft Worth was
victorious in the 11th inning.  The key offensive moment was provided by
Anthony Rizzo who thrilled the crowd when he lofted a three-run bomb.  Dallas
Ft Worth managed 12 hits in their victory. 

The winning pitcher was Archer(10-11) who allowed 3 runs for the game. The
loss was charged to Roberto Osuna(3-3) in relief. 

Archer was pleased with his performance.  He noted, 'I had good zip on my
pitches.  Just as important, my location was right on.  The fans really got
into the game too - that always helps me.  Now, if I can only do that again
in my next outing.'
   

Freeman & Miller lead LCC over DFW, 12-3.

Gio Gonzalez whiffed 10 batters and Freddie Freeman lofted one into the 'cheap
seats' and had 3 RBI at Turnpike Stadium where the Lake Champlain Cannibals
beat the Dallas Ft Worth Spurs 12 to 3.

Freeman had a big day at the plate. He clubbed a two-run home run in the 1st
inning, lined a base-hit resulting in a run in the 3rd inning and doubled in
the 7th inning.  Lake Champlain ended up with 13 hits for the game while
Dallas Ft Worth had 9. 

Gonzalez(8-7) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 3 runs. Mike Leake(11-11) was tagged with the loss.  He allowed a
few too many baserunners giving up 7 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 1/3 innings.

Red Robbins was impressed with Gonzalez and his 10 strikeouts.  'It's tough to
generate runs if you can't make contact with the ball.'

DFW belts 3 dingers and H.Street goes 3.2 innings for the save in 7-2 victory.

Brandon Phillips cracked a homer and had 2 RBI as the incredible Dallas Ft
Worth Spurs defeated the Slatington Bulldogs 7 to 2 at Turnpike
Stadium.

Garrett Richards(9-6) gave a fine effort for Dallas Ft Worth.  He was reached
for 4 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.  Dallas Ft Worth finished with 9
hits while Slatington ended up with 6. 

Huston Street recorded the save, his 1st.  Collin McHugh(8-10) ended up with
the loss.  He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 8 innings of work. 

DeShields SAC FLY wins it for SBU in the 12th for 6-5 victory.

Third baseman Adrian Beltre had 5 hits and 2 RBI at Turnpike Stadium where the
Slatington Bulldogs beat the Dallas Ft Worth Spurs in 12 innings by the score
of 6 to 5.

The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings.  Slatington won the game in the
12th inning.  Rusney Castillo lined a one-base hit.  Jean Segura stepped up
to the plate and he delivered a single.  Segura was safe at second on a
stolen base.  One out later, Delino Deshields came to bat and hit a sacrifice
fly scoring the run.  Overall Slatington out-hit Dallas Ft Worth 18 to 10.

Corey Knebel(3-3) got the win allowing no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. Knebel
was helped out by Zach McAllister who recorded his 1st save.  Ryan
Madson(4-3) was the loser in relief.  He surrendered 1 run and 3 hits in 2
innings. 

Archer strikeout's 14 and gets the win whenHeyward drives in GW in the 10th, for 5-4 win.

Chris Archer struck out 14 batters and Aaron Hicks had 2 base hits and 2 RBI
as the blistering-hot Dallas Ft Worth Spurs defeated the Slatington Bulldogs
in 10 innings by a score of 5 to 4 at Turnpike Stadium.

The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings.  Dallas Ft Worth won the
hard fought contest in the 10th inning.  Anthony Rizzo delivered a single,
and an error was also committed.  Brandon Crawford followed next and he drew
a walk.  Brandon Phillips then laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Jason Heyward
came up and he laced a base-knock resulting in a mighty exciting win for
Dallas Ft Worth and the 49,058 home town fans in attendance.  Dallas Ft Worth
had 14 hits for the night. 

Archer(9-11) allowed 4 runs on the game. Corey Knebel(2-3) was charged with
the loss in relief.  He surrendered 2 hits and 1 walk in 1 and 1/3 innings.

Red Robbins was asked about the performance of Archer, 'He had his good stuff
out there tonight.  The fans really get into it when the strikeouts start
mounting up - and that seems to give him even more adrenalin.'

Mike Leake(11-8) had a solid outing for Dallas Ft Worth.  He was reached for
10 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.  Pocono made it exciting in the
9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. 

Hector Rondon earned his 33rd save.  Max Scherzer(6-14) was hit with the loss.
Although losing the contest, he whiffed 13 batters in 6 and 2/3 innings.

'It wasn't my best outing, but I'll take the win' Leake said.

Todd Frazier smacked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Dallas Keuchel retired 15
batters on strikeouts as the indomitable Dallas Ft Worth Spurs crushed the
struggling Pocono Chin Music 21 to 2.

Frazier was a one-man wrecking crew. He doubled in the 2nd inning, smacked a
three-run homer in the 3rd inning, ripped a base-hit in the 4th inning and
cracked a two-run shot in the 6th inning.  Dallas Ft Worth bats were very
productive in the 3rd inning which saw them score 6 runs on 5 hits and the
6th inning with 9 runs on 10 hits.  Dallas Ft Worth had a total of 24 hits
for the game.

Keuchel(15-6) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Jorge De La
Rosa(0-1) was the loser.  He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 2 innings of
work.

Keuchel was jubilant in the hometown clubhouse, 'It was a lot of fun out
there.  The fans gave me a lot of support as did my teammates.  We got the
victory and I'll sure take 15 strikeouts anytime!'

Chris Archer retired 10 batters on strikeouts and left fielder Aaron Hicks had
4 hits and 2 RBI as the incredible Dallas Ft Worth Spurs defeated the
slumping Pocono Chin Music by the score of 4 to 1 at Turnpike
Stadium.

Archer(8-11) was in control of the game from the outset.  He gave up just 5
hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.  The Pocono bats were silent in the 9th.

Robbie Ray(3-7) was the loser.  He allowed 10 hits and 5 walks in 6 innings.
Archer was pleased with his performance.  He noted, 'I had good zip on my
pitches.  Just as important, my location was right on.  The fans really got
into the game too - that always helps me.  Now, if I can only do that again
in my next outing.'

Harper's walk off leads DFW over PCM, 3-2.

Bryce Harper knocked 2 homeruns and Chris Archer tossed a fine 3 hitter as the
Dallas Ft Worth Spurs won a dandy at Turnpike Stadium over the struggling
Pocono Chin Music, 3 to 2.

The deciding run was scored by Dallas Ft Worth in the bottom of the 9th.
Jason Heyward smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' giving Dallas Ft Worth the win
as 33,541 happy fans joyfully celebrated.  Dallas Ft Worth finished with 9
hits in the victory. 

Archer(7-11) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Max
Scherzer(6-13) was tagged with the loss.  He served up 3 gopher balls in 8
innings. 

'Everything felt great' Archer said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could
throw it by everybody today.'

Mike Leake threw a 2 hit shutout as the indomitable Dallas Ft Worth Spurs
defeated the struggling Pocono Chin Music by the score of 7 to 0 at Turnpike
Stadium.

Leake(10-8) escaped virtually unscathed against the Pocono hitters.  He didn't
allow much, just 2 hits and no walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 4.10
to 3.87.  Dallas Ft Worth had 13 hits for the night. 

Bartolo Colon(3-7) was charged with the loss.  He was not very effective,
surrendering 7 runs in 6 innings.
