Cole Hamels
carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning at M.Burns Memorial Field where the
Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs beat the Springfield Isotopes by the score of 3 to 2. Hamels
(1-0) gave Lehigh Valley a solid outing.
He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk in 6 and 1/3
innings. The left-handed Hamels lost a
no-hitter when Austin Jackson singled with one out in the 7th inning. Tyler
Lyons, after tossing a perfect ninth, was credited with his 1st save. Marcus
Stroman (0-1) was charged with the loss.
He allowed 3 runs and 7 hits in 6 and 1/3 innings.
Game 2: LVI 1-SPR
2 (Series tied 1-1)
Brent Suter
delivered 3 solid innings as the Springfield Isotopes bested the Lehigh Valley
Iron Pigs in 10 innings 2 to 1 at M.Burns Memorial Field. The game was
deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. Springfield won it in the 10th inning.
Kevin Kiermaier drew a walk. Jake
Lamb followed next and he drew a walk. Jon Gray then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Jacoby Ellsbury was up next and he lined a
base-hit resulting in a mighty exciting win for Springfield and the 49,696 home
town fans in attendance. Springfield
ended up with 7 hits for the game while Lehigh Valley had 4. Darren O'Day (1-0)
went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the win. David Robertson (0-1) was
given the loss in relief. He allowed 1
run and 1 hit in 1 inning.
Game 3: SPR 1-LVI
0 (SPR leads series 2-1)
Max Scherzer
allowed 2 hits while blanking Lehigh Valley as the Springfield Isotopes topped
the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs by a score of 1 to 0 at The Pig Pen. Scherzer (1-0)
dominated Lehigh Valley hitters. He
allowed only 2 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Scherzer whiffed an impressive total of 10 Lehigh Valley batters. Lehigh Valley threatened in the 9th but
Springfield was able to put down the rally. Carlos Carrasco (0-1) was charged
with the loss. 'When Scherzer is on like that it is a tough game to play, no
doubt about it,' Kevin Burns said. 'He always pitches well against us.'
Game 4: SPR 3-LVI
11 (Series tied 2-2)
Luis Severino
racked up an impressive total of 12 strikeouts at The Pig Pen where the Lehigh
Valley Iron Pigs beat the Springfield Isotopes by the score of 11 to 3. Severino
(1-0) was very good in the win. He
surrendered only 6 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings. Lehigh Valley rapped out 13 hits for the
night. Marcus Stroman (0-2) was tagged with the loss. The Lehigh Valley fans were thrilled by the
performance put forth by Severino, but it was clearly his strikeouts that they
enjoyed most. 'When he reached 10 strikeouts the fans showed him their
appreciation with a loud cheer.' Kevin Burns said following the game.
Game 5: SPR 0-LVI
3 (LVI leads series 3-2)
Stephen Strasburg
whitewashed Springfield on 3 hits as the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs bested the
Springfield Isotopes 3 to 0 at The Pig Pen. Strasburg (1-0) was indeed
brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Springfield offense. He didn't give up much,
just 3 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. Strasburg recorded 11 strikeouts.
The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to
score again. Jon Gray (0-1) was hit with
the loss. 'Strasburg took our guys to
school' Doug Sherlag said. 'Too bad he doesn't pitch for us - it would make my
job a whole lot easier!'
Game 6: LVI 2-SPR
6 (Series tied 3-3)
Travis Shaw
cracked a homer as the Springfield Isotopes topped the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs
by a score of 6 to 2 at M.Burns Memorial Field. Springfield took the lead for
good in the 6th inning plating an isolated run on 2 base hits. After two outs Matt Olson was walked
intentionally. Josh Reddick stepped into
the batter's box and he delivered a single. Jose Ramirez then lashed a single scoring the run. Springfield had 9 hits for the game and
Lehigh Valley had 3. Felipe Rivero (1-0) went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no
runs for the win. The loss was charged to Ryan Madson (0-1) in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 hits
and 1 walk.
Game 7: LVI 6-SPR
1 (LVI wins series 4-3)
In a one-sided
affair at M.Burns Memorial Field the final score was the Lehigh Valley Iron
Pigs 6, the Springfield Isotopes 1. Cole Hamels (2-0) contributed a pedestrian
performance to earn the win. He went 5
and 1/3 innings and surrendered up 6 hits and 4 walks dropping his ERA from
2.84 to 2.31. Lehigh Valley totaled 11
hits on the night. Juan Nicasio (0-1)
took the loss in relief. He allowed 3
runs and 2 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.
