Iron Pigs Roll in Mud for First Time

The first block home games were an exciting mixture of elation and heartbreak. Lehigh Valley fans were treated to a mixture of good, bad and ugly. The season started out well with a 12-2 victory over division rival Georgia Road Kill. The victory went to Gaudin and the loss went to Escobar.

Highlights of the first block included a three game sweep of Lake Champlain in which Iron Pigs pitching was stingy, holding the high powered Cannibal offense to a total of 6 runs in three games. Rookie Diasuke Matsuzaka was particularly impressive in the first block, compiling a record of 6-1 and an astonishing ERA of 0.91. The offensive leader was newcomer Carl Crawford, who sported a line of 0.327, 20 R, 23 RBI, 3 HR, and 19 SB.

The ugly included several "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory" contests. Closer Valverde was particularly skilled in this area, compiling a record of 0-2, 3 SV, 11.05 ERA. Ryan Howard was particularly uninspiring offensively. He sported a nifty .184, 7 R, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 27 K mark for the first 27 games. Management has let it be known that this is unacceptable. Neither Howard nor Valverde were available for comment.
